Graham Repeats at Iowa State Fair Speedway;

Davis Wins First Time in Dirt Truck

by David Wilkinson

(Des Moines, Iowa) (April 15) For the second Friday night in a row, Pat Graham made a pass coming out of turn four to win the IMCA modified feature at the Iowa State Fair Speedway. Bill Davis Jr. won the Karl Chevrolet dirt truck main in his first-ever dirt truck race. Mike Todd won the IMCA stock car feature race and Don Wear and Jacob Murray won IMCA hobby mains.

John Davis took the early lead in the IMCA modified main with Mark Daughenbaugh right behind, if not beside him. On the 11th lap, Davis drifted too high in turn four allowing Pat Graham the opportunity to pass. On lap 14, Graham bobbled low in turn three allowing Daughenbaugh to retake the lead. One lap later, Daughenbaugh drifted a bit too high in turn four allowing Graham the opportunity to speed by and take the checkered first followed by Daughenbaugh, Davis, and Tony Hofbauer.

In the IMCA stock car feature, Travis Hansaker took the lead from his pole starting position. On a lap three restart, Steve Curtis passed Hansaker and opened a nice lead. On the eighth lap, a tire blew and Curtis pulled in. Mike Todd was running second and inherited the lead. Todd held off a late race challenge from Justin Maschke to take the victory. Hansaker ran third and John Watson was fourth.

Patrick Lowe passed Danny Watson on the second lap of the first IMCA hobby stock feature and looked likely to win as he increased his lead. On the last lap, Lowe spun out in turn two allowing Don Wear to drive by. Wear finished first, Bill Dawson second, Bruce Wolfe third, and Steve Clair fourth. After the race, Watson claimed Dawson’s engine.

In the second hobby main, Jacob Murray passed John Allison early in the race and was able to hold off a furious challenge by Doug Seidl. A caution flag was thrown on the last lap for the stopped car of Cody Stamper, thus resulting in a yellow-checkered finish. The finishing order was Murray first, Seidl second, Bill Bonnett third, and Mike Johnston in fourth.

Bill Davis Jr, driving in his first-ever truck race, made a last lap pass to nip Carl Moyer at the finish for the win in the Karl Chevrolet dirt truck feature. Jason Vincent led the first third of the race. Moyer led the second third of the race and Moyer and Davis jr. exchanged the lead three times and ran side-by-side for much of the last third. The final order was Davis Jr., Moyer, Matt Waugh, and Rick Clark.

Kyle Wahlert’s late race pass let him win the IMCA sport mod feature. Kelly Vanheiden ran second and Tim Gannon third.

Bob Thompson passed Jerry Crabb early in the 305-sprint race and led to the finish followed by Crabb, Tom Lenz, and Rob Kobli.

Mike Morrill led every lap and claimed his second straight dwarf car feature at the track this season. James May finished second, Fred Schimmels third, and Mike Thomas fourth.

Racing continues Friday with the first night of competition for IMCA late models. The card also includes IMCA modifieds, stock cars, hobby stocks, and sport mods as well as Karl Chevrolet dirt trucks. Hot laps are at 6:00 PM with racing following around 7:00 PM.
