For Immediate Release

Cooney, Hofbauer, Murray, and Moyer Win at the Iowa State Fair Speedway

by David Wilkinson

(Des Moines, Iowa) (April 29, 2005) The IMCA late models opened their season Friday night on a chilly night at the Iowa State Fair Speedway. The program finished at 9:30 PM, allowing racers and fans an early escape from the cold. Todd Cooney, as he often does, won the IMCA late model feature. The IMCA modified winner was Tony Hofbauer and Jason Murray won the IMCA stock car feature. Bret Moyer won the Karl Chevrolet dirt truck feature.

It looked like the IMCA late model feature was going to be an easy win for Todd Cooney as he started on the pole and opened a nice lead on the rest of the field. On lap four, Rob Toland broke out of the pack and started to reel in Cooney. By lap nine, Toland pulled along side Cooney and they raced. Cooney was always in the lead as they passed the finish line, but Toland passed him at times during laps and they often raced side-by-side. Cooney held off Toland for the win with Ryan Griffiths third and Nick Houseman fourth.

Russ Gladson took the early lead in the IMCA modified main. On lap four, Tony Hofbauer passed Gladson and created a large lead on his way to the checkered. Mark Daughenbaugh finished second, Richie Gustin third, and Pat Graham fourth. After the race, Kevin Danielson claimed Gustin’s engine.

Jason Murray led all fifteen laps of the IMCA stock car feature. Steve Curtis chased Murray and finished second. Mike Todd was third and Josh Daniels ran fourth.

It was an exciting Karl Chevrolet dirt truck race. Mike Hoffman jumped into the lead at the start. By the fifth lap, Ben Nading passed Hoffman. Bret Moyer challenged Nading and they ran door-to-door and exchanged the lead all around the track. Moyer seemed to have the edge in turns one and two while Nading ran best in turns three and four. By lap 12, Carl Moyer was running just behind the two leaders. On the last lap, Bret Moyer had moved into the lead coming out of turn four. Just behind him, Carl Moyer rubbed sheet metal with Nading. Nading bobbled, allowing Carl Moyer to be in second place. Nading ran third and Lou Sipolt was fourth.

In the first IMCA hobby stock main, Patrick Lowe led the first five laps. By the sixth lap, Bill Bonnett, who started tenth, passed Lowe for lead. Just after that, Lowe rubbed the front straightaway wall and then slammed into the wall in turn one. After the restart, Matt Inman, who was near the leader, rolled coming out of turn four. Shortly after Inman exited the car, the car burst into flames and was engulfed by fire for a couple of minutes. Bonnett went on to win with Mike Johnston second, Don Wear third, and Ron Prymek fourth.

Adam Hagen was the early leader in the second hobby stock feature. By the third lap, Bob Johnson challenged Hagen and overtook him on the next lap. A few laps later, Doug Seidl moved into the lead and raced to finish first. Jacob Murray finished second, Todd Bass third, and Steve Clair ran fourth. After the race, John Thoren claimed Seidl’s engine.

The IMCA sportmod feature winner was Kenny Vanderheiden with Tim Gannon second.

Racing continues Friday in the divisions of IMCA late models, modifieds, stock cars, hobby stocks, and sport mods as well as Karl Chevrolet dirt trucks. Hot laps are at 6:00 PM with racing following around 7:00 PM.
