For Immediate Release

Moro, Inman, R. Killen, B. Moyer win at the Iowa State Fair Speedway

by David Wilkinson

(Des Moines, Iowa) (May 27, 2005) Friday was Karl Chevrolet Night at the Iowa State Fair Speedway and good planning by promoter Mick Trier led to a great night of racing. With rain a strong possibility, he stopped watering the track in the afternoon. Just after the completion of hot laps, it rained for 15 minutes. After packing by trucks and the cars, racing started 15 minutes late.

The Killen family dominated the IMCA stock car class with Randy Killen winning. Tony Moro took the exciting IMCA late model feature and Todd Inman won the IMCA modified main. Bret Moyer came from deep in the field to win the Karl Chevrolet dirt trucks, and IMCA hobby stocks wins went to Jacob Murray and Ryan Lundy. Keith Williamson won the IMCA SportMod race.

The entire IMCA late model feature was lead by a car with the number 2, first the 2 of Gordy Grubb and later by the 2m of Tony Moro. Grubb vaulted into the lead from his pole starting position. Moro and Jeremy Grady exchanged second and third place four times in the first six laps. On the 12th lap, Moro using the high groove, pulled along side of Grubb, and raced much of two laps door-to-door with Moro leading as the 13th lap was scored. On the next lap, Moro bobbled in turn two allowing Grubb to retain the lead. Two laps later they ran side-by-side again with Moro regaining first place on lap 16 and he took the checkered first followed by Mike Smith, Grubb, and Todd Cooney. Rob Toland, point’s leader going into the race, left the race on the fourth lap with drive shaft problems.

The IMCA modified main was another exciting race with five different leaders. Melissa Johnson led the first lap, John Davis the second lap, Russ Gladson the third lap, and Tony Hofbauer the fourth lap. On the backstretch of the eighth lap, three cars ran door-to-door as came out of turn two. The drivers from the inside to outside were Pat Graham, Hofbauer, and Todd Inman. Graham and Hofbauer rubbed sheet metal with Graham then leaving the race. Inman took the lead and won the race. Finishing behind him were Hofbauer, Dave Farren Jr., and Bill Davis Jr.

Father and son, Don and Randy Killen, won two of the three IMCA stock car heats and finished first and second in the feature. The younger Killen, Randy, won the race and the elder, Don finished second. Don Killen started on the pole and led the first four laps. On the fifth lap, Randy Killen passed his father and they ran one and two to the checkered. Mike Todd finished third and Bobby Davis III ran fourth.

Frank Grove led the first two laps of the Karl Chevrolet dirt truck main. On lap three, Mike Hoffman passed Grove for first. On the tenth lap, Bret Moyer, who started deep in the field, moved past Hoffman and was able to hold off challenges by Hoffman for the win. The finishing order was Moyer, Hoffman, Matt Waugh, and Jeff Luke.

In the first IMCA hobby stock feature, George Clark led the first lap and Ron Prymek led the next two laps.  On lap four, Jacob Murray roared by Prymek and led to the finish. Prymek was second, Ray Stock Jr., third, and Bill Bonnett was fourth. After the race, Steve Hill claimed Murray’s engine.

In the second hobby main, Kirk Brown passed leader Brett Reynolds on the second lap, opened a nice lead, and looked the winner. But on lap nine of the ten-lap race, his axle broke in turn three and Brown’s car rolled violently with sheet metal flying. He emerged from the car as rescuers arrived. Reynolds inherited the lead, but on the last lap Ryan Lundy passed Reynolds for the win. Reynolds finished second, Bill Dawson was third, and Don Wear ran fourth. After the race, Matt Sheets claimed Lundy’s engine.

Keith Williamson won the IMCA SportMod main with Tim Gannon second, Dean Olson third, and Curtis Glover finished fourth.

Racing continues Friday with mid-season championships for IMCA late models, modifieds, stock cars, hobby stocks, and sport mods as well as Karl Chevrolet dirt trucks. In addition, dwarf cars and 305 sprint cars will compete. Hot laps are at 6:00 PM with racing following around 7:00 PM.
