Iowa State Fair Speedway Victors –

Toland, Inman, Murray, Nading, Yaw and Bonnett

by David Wilkinson

(Des Moines, Iowa) (May 6, 2005) Friday was Coca-Cola Night at the Iowa State Fair Speedway and the winners were Rob Toland, IMCA late models; Todd Inman, IMCA modifieds; Jason Murray, IMCA stock cars; John Yaw Sr. and Bill Bonnett, IMCA hobby stocks; Ben Nading, Karl Chevrolet dirt trucks; and Kyle Wahlert, IMCA SportMods.

Rob Toland vaulted into the lead from his second row starting position at the beginning of the IMCA late model main and led all 18 laps to capture the win. Mike Smith finished second and Ryan Griffiths passed Todd Cooney on the last lap to regain third, placing Cooney fourth.

Todd Inman and Pat Graham exchanged the lead in an exciting IMCA modified feature. Inman took the lead on the first lap and created a nice lead over Graham. On the lap ten restart, Graham edged past Inman and appeared on his way to his third win of the season at the track. On the white flag lap, Inman slid up into Graham in turn three, Graham scrapped the wall, and Inman regained the lead. Inman finished first, Graham second, Richie Gustin third, and Russ Gladson fourth.

Twenty-six of the twenty-seven IMCA stock cars on hand started the main event. Jason Murray started on the pole and led every lap. Murray erected a wide lead at the beginning of the race and was able to rebuild the lead after each of the two cautions. The finishing order was Murray, Steve Curtis, Steve Jackson, and Travis Hansaker. After the race, Mike Todd claimed Murray’s engine.

John Yaw Sr. led all ten laps of the first IMCA hobby stock feature. Gene Behle finished second, Matt Inman third, and Doug Seidl fourth. After the race, Bill Dawson claimed Inman’s engine. Inman refused the claim and was disqualified. Also, Kirk Brown claimed Seidl’s engine and he sold. With the exit of Inman, Seidl was scored third and Dawson fourth.

Adam Hagen led the first half of the second hobby main and Bill Bonnett led second half and took the checkered first. Don Wear ran second, Mike Egenberger finished third, and Bruce Wolfe was fourth.

The Karl Chevrolet dirt truck feature saw Ben Nading overcome a spin in his heat race, a sixth row start in the feature, and then avoid trouble as smoke shot out of his engine as he took the checkered first. Mike Hoffman was the early leader as Nading patiently worked through the field. Finishing behind Nading was Bret Moyer, Hoffman and Lou Sipolt.

Kyle Wahlert passed Tim Gannon on the first lap of the IMCA SportMod and led all the way to the finish with Gannon running second.

Racing continues Friday, Miller Lite Beer Night, in the divisions of IMCA late models, modifieds, stock cars, hobby stocks, and sport mods as well as Karl Chevrolet dirt trucks. Hot laps are at 6:00 PM with racing following around 7:00 PM.
