Friday, April 7, 2000 Des Moines, Iowa -- Danny Young Special at Iowa Fair Speedway by DAVID WILKINSON Plans for an old tradition to start a new era were delayed as cold, blustery, and wet weather cancelled the first-ever dirt truck feature at the historic Iowa State Fairgrounds Speedway Friday night in Des Moines. However, the season will begin next Friday (April 14) by the annual Danny Young Memorial Race for 360 sprint cars. Over 40 winged sprints are expected for the show that honors the life of the young sprint car specialist who died at the Knoxville Speedway a few years ago. Young was a regular winner of the half-mile races at the fairgrounds. Twenty-four sprints are expected to start the feature with the winner claiming $1,500 of the $8,000 purse. Other classes competing next week are IMCA modifieds, IMCA stock cars, and IMCA hobby stocks. Hot laps are scheduled for 5:30 pm with races at 6:30. Admission for this event is $10 for adults, $5 for children with pit passes available for $17. In case of bad weather, April 21 is set as the rain date.
