Iowa State Fair Speedway Victors

Cooney, Logue, Hunnell, and Johnson

by DAVID WILKINSON

Des Moines, Iowa – One hundred sixty-five cars crowded into the pits Friday night at the Iowa State Fair Speedway as Todd Cooney became the first Iowan to win an IMCA late model feature at the track. John Logue continue his dominance in the IMCA modified class as he collected his fifth victory of the season just as Jeff Johnson collected his fourth Karl Chevrolet NDTR truck feature. John Hunnell won the IMCA stock car feature and the winners of the three IMCA hobby stock features were Bill Bonnet, Steve Curtis, and Rick Gladson.

Twenty-six IMCA late models competed with Wade Russell taking the early lead in the main. Jason Freisen and Todd Cooney passed him on the third lap and the race was stopped after Billy Allen hit the wall hard coming out turn two. Then Freisen and Cooney extended their lead to almost one-half of a lap and on the 16th lap of the 18-lap feature, Cooney passed Freisen and crossed the finish line first. Chris Spicker finished a distant third with Chris Smyser in fourth.

Dude Thompson took the early lead of the IMCA modified feature, until Bill Davis passed him on lap three. John Logue, who started tenth, moved forward and passed Davis three laps later. Logue held off the challenges of Davis, Dave Farren, and Danny Wallace to the checkered. Twenty-eight modifieds competed in the race. After the race, Dude Thompson claimed Logue’s engine.

In the IMCA stock car feature, Todd Fisher took the lead from the pole position and raced hard. On the tenth lap of the 15-lap arace, John Hunnell moved into the lead and then claimed the victory. Fisher finished second with Steve Jackson third and Jason Henry fourth. Twenty-three cars competed.

Jeff Johnson defeated the top three of Steve Jackson, Mark Fee, Lou Sipolt, and others to win the Karl Chevrolet NDTR truck feature.

Three IMCA hobby stock features were held to accommodate the 66 cars that signed-in to race. Bill Bonnet won the first feature followed by John Davis, Mark Chance, and Jason Murray. The second feature went to Steve Curtis for the third time this season. Following him to the finish were Mike Stark, Randy Casner, and Frank Grove. Rick Gladson won his third feature of the season with Shawn Essex second, John Thoren third, and Jeff Hovick fourth.

Dwarf cars replaced the 360 sprint cars on the program as a special Friday night show was held at the nearby Knoxville Raceway. Cliff Barber won the feature followed by Mike Morrill, Randy Bryan, and Scott Bailey

The 360-sprints return next Friday with racing in all classes beginning with hot laps at 6:15 followed by racing.
