Iowa State Fair Winners

Houseman, Cochran, Troy Folkerts, and Davis III

by DAVID WILKINSON

Des Moines, Iowa – On this beautiful Friday night, several drivers got their pictures taken as winners for the first time this year at the Iowa State Fair Speedway. Ron Cochran won the IMCA late model, Mike Houseman the 360-sprint main, Troy Folkerts the IMCA modified feature, and Maynard Davis III won in his IMCA stock car. Mark Fee won the Karl Chevrolet NDTR mid-season championship. For the fourth time this year, Rick Gladson won a IMCA hobby stock feature and John Davis, for the second time this year, won a hobby feature.

Ron Cochran took advantage of his front row starting position as he placed his IMCA late model in front and then led all 18 laps of the feature. Ray Guss Jr. followed Cochran for the entire race and finished second with Craig Jacobs third and Darrell DeFrance fourth.

Time ran out on the 360 Sprint feature as several cautions and a red flag ate up time. Mike Houseman led all 14 laps of the shorten race and took the yellow-checkered. Tim St. Arnold weaved his car through the field and was looking for a chance to catch Houseman, but had to settle for second. Josh Higday finished third and Dennis Moore Jr. finished fourth.

Brian George, the early leader of the IMCA modified feature, ran side by side with Bill Davis for several laps until Davis took the lead. But the second half of the race belonged to Troy Folkerts who started 12th and steered through the field to pass both George and Davis. Folkerts pulled away from the field and won easily with Davis second, Bill Davis Jr third, and Dave Farren fourth.

Maynard Davis III led at the start and the end of the IMCA stock car race with Danny Hill leading six laps in the middle of the race. In second behind Davis was Don Killen with John Hunnell third and Cale Sponsler fourth.

Rick Gladson passed Mike Stark on the white flag lap of the first IMCA hobby stock main and took the vistory with Stark second, Larry Embrey third, and Mark Chance fourth. In the second hobby feature, John Davis passed Bill Bonnett on lap two and led to the finish. Rusty Groves finished second, Shawn Essex third, and Mike Thomas fourth. After the first feature, Jeremy Goetschius claimed Gladson’s engine.

It was the mid-season championship night for the Karl Chevrolet NDTR trucks. Mark Fee led the entire race and captured his second victory of the night. Sean Allen finished second, Jeff Johnson third, and Kyle Leonard fourth.

Racing in all classes continues next Friday with hot laps at 6:00 followed by racing.
