Iowa State Fair Speedway

Gustin Family Dominates Modifieds

by David Wilkinson

(Des Moines, Iowa) There was lots of racing Friday night at the Iowa State Fair Speedway as the father and son duo from the Gustin Family won the two features for IMCA modifieds and the track staff, drivers, and fans outlasted the rainy weather. Son Jimmy Gustin won the postponed modified feature from the previous week and then father Rick Gustin won the regular modified feature.

IMCA stock car victories went to Jeff Anderson and Don Killen with IMCA hobby stock wins to Bill Bonnett and Rick Gladson. Karl Chevrolet NDTRA dirt truck features were captured by Lou Sipolt and Mark Fee.

In the regular IMCA modified feature, Kendall Sather led until Rick Gustin passed him on the fourth lap. Gustin was able to take the checkered just ahead of Sather, Danny Wallace and Dave Farren.

In the IMCA stock car feature, Todd Fisher led the first six laps with Don Killen passing him on lap seven. Killen led a trio of cars including Jeff Anderson and Fisher who pulled ahead of the rest of the cars by nearly one-quarter of a mile. Anderson tried desperately to pass Killen to claim a second win of the evening, but it didn’t happen. The top four finishers were Killen, Anderson, Fisher and Mike Todd.

In the first IMCA hobby stock feature, Bill bonnet led all ten laps for the win. Finishing second was Scott Durlin, third was Larry Embrey, and Joey Jones was fourth. After the race, Justin Maschke claimed Durlin’s engine. In the second IMCA hobby stock feature, Rick Gladson led the entire race finishing ahead of Eric Stanton, Craig Roberts, and John Thoren. After the race, Thoren was disqualified for illegal equipment.

In the Karl Chevrolet NDTRA dirt truck feature, Mark Fee passed early leader Tom Losee and took the checkered. Jeff Johnson was second with Steve Phillipsen third and Rick Warden fourth.

Racing continues next Friday with the return of IMCA late models joining the line-up of IMCA modifieds, stock cars, hobby stocks, and NDTRA dirt trucks. Hot laps begin at 6:00 pm and will be followed by racing.
