Toland Wins at Iowa State Fair Speedway

by David Wilkinson

(Des Moines, Iowa) Rob Toland won the first IMCA late model feature of the season at the Iowa State Fair Speedway Friday night. The Gustin family again this week showed their prowess as father Rick repeated his IMCA modified featured win from last week as his son Richie won one of the IMCA hobby stock features. Bill Bonnett won the other hobby stock feature as Steve Jackson won the IMCA stock car main. Mark Fee repeated this week as winner in the NDTR dirt truck feature.

Ronnie Binning took the early lead in the IMCA late model feature, but Mark Noble passed him on lap and started to pull away from the field. Two laps later, an equipment malfunction caused him to pull into the infield giving the lead to Todd Cooney. Cooney held the lead for two laps until passed by Rob Toland. Toland pulled away and won the race followed by Cooney, Ron Cochran and Craig Jacobs.

Russ Gladson moved his IMCA modified from the pole into the lead at the start of the feature. Rick Gustin, who started in the sixth row, moved his car forward and began challenging Gladson by the fourth lap. On lap six, they ran virtually side-by-side until Gustin moved to the front. Gustin then pulled away from the field. A late race restart bunched the field, but no one could catch Gustin. Danny Wallace finished second, Gladson third, and Mark Allgood was fourth.

Steve Jackson led flag-to-flag in the IMCA stock car feature and was never challenged. After blowing an engine last week in the make-up feature and then missing the regular program, Jackson made the best of his pole position start. Finishing behind him was Greg Shepherd, Tim Baker and Jeff Anderson.

Bill Bonnett led the first two and then the last lap in the first IMCA hobby stock feature. Rick Gladson passed Bonnett on lap three and was chased by Bonnett and Kris Walker. Coming off turn four on the white flag lap, Walker moved into the lead followed by Bonnett and Gladson and then Bonnett passed Walker and took the checkered first. Walker finished second, Gladson third and Jason Maschke fourth. After the race, Jason Murray claimed Walker’s engine.

John Thompson took the early lead in the second hobby feature. On lap three, he spun coming out of turn two and Darcy Hoch took the lead. Richie Gustin challenged Hoch for several laps and finally moved into the lead near the end of the race. The top finishers were Gustin, Hoch, Melissa Johnson, and Jeff Behle.

In the Karl Chevrolet NDTR dirt truck feature, Sean Allen captured the early lead then equipment problems forced him to drop out half way through the race. Mark Fee inherited the lead and pulled away from the field. Steve Phillipsen finished second, Jim Phillipsen third, and Lou Sipolt fourth.

Racing continues in all classes next Friday night with hot laps at 6:00 pm followed by racing.
