Iowa State Fair: Logue, Killen, and Moyer Winners

by David Wilkinson

(Des Moines, Iowa) (August 11, 2001) For the second year in a row, John Logue won the Saturday race for modifieds at the Iowa State Fair Speedway while Don Killen won the stock car feature and Brett Moyer took the win in the Karl Chevrolet NDTR dirt truck division. In hobby stocks, Rick Gladson repeated his win from last year as T. J. Criss and Jason Mallicoat won the other two hobby features.

By the time of the modified feature, the track was dry-slick and tricky. However, John Logue had the key and won the 25-lap main easily. He started on the pole and led from the drop of the green to the checkered. Bill Davis Jr. ran second with David Brown third and Adam Larson, who started in the eleventh position, finished fourth.

The stock car main began with Rick Brown leading on the first lap. Don Killen passed him on the next lap and led to the checkered. Killen’s black number 81 started spouting a mild cloud of blue smoke on the seventh lap and continued throughout the race. After the race, Killen identified the problem as his distributor gasket. Brown ran a solid race finishing second with Mickey Kerr in third and Mark Elliott in fourth.

In the first of three hobby stock features, Scott Buehneman moved into the lead on the first lap from his fourth row starting position. On the eighth lap of the 12-lap race, T. J. Criss moved under Buehneman in turn four and took the lead. At the checkered, the finishing order was Criss, Buehneman, Damon Murty, and Rusty Groves.

Dustin Smith took the early lead of the second hobby feature with Rick Gladson challenging. On the sixth lap, Gladson moved into the lead and Smith left the race two laps later. Larry Embrey then chased Gladson but was unable to catch him. Finishing behind Gladson and Embrey were Bill Bonnett and Keith Williamson.

Jason Mallicoat led the entire race in the final hobby feature with Mark Chance finishing second, Mark Hagland third, and Ryan Lundy fourth.

Jeff Johnson burst past the front row starters at the start of the Karl Chevrolet NDTR dirt trucks to capture the lead. On lap five of 16-lap feature, Mark Fee passed Johnson. Then on lap eight, Fee spun out bringing out a caution flag and he was sent to the back of the field. Johnson became the leader, but immediately left the race with mechanical problems. Thus, Brett Moyer, who started in the seventh row and had moved into third, inherited the lead. Moyer led the rest of the race and won easily with Rick Warden finishing second, Fee in third, and Ben Nading in fourth.
