Iowa State Fair Speedway:

Jackson Joins a Gustin Family Affair

by David Wilkinson

(Des Moines, Iowa) (July 13, 2001) It looked like a repeat of last week’s father-son top two finish in the IMCA modified feature Friday night at the Iowa State Fair Speedway, just a different family. Last week it was the Davis family, this week the Gustin’s. But it wasn’t that simple. Rick Gustin finished first in both the IMCA late model and the IMCA modified features, but was disqualified in the modified feature, thus the victory went to his son Richie Gustin.

Steve Jackson won his third straight IMCA stock car main and his fifth of the season at the fairgrounds. Jeff Johnson won his second NDTR truck feature in as many weeks as Craig Roberts, Rick Gladson, and Gene Behle captured the IMCA hobby stock races.

In the IMCA modified main, Richie Gustin grabbed the lead from his pole starting position. On the tenth lap of the 15-lap race, his father Rick Gustin passed him. The senior Gustin had started 12th, then shot past his son and opened a huge lead. At the checkered, it was Rick Gustin, Richie Gustin, Rod Scheurermann, and Chris Wilkie.

Following the race, Russ Gladson claimed the engine of the winner. At first Gustin was going to sell, and then he started his car and drove into the pits. Gustin finally decided to sell, but as a penalty for stating his engine after a claim, he was disqualified for the night and lost his winnings and points for the night. After the races, Gladson left the pits with Gustin’s engine. The disqualification moved the rest of the field up and son Richie won.

Greg Moyer shot into the lead at the start of the IMCA late model feature. After a restart midway through he race, Rick Gustin passed Moyer and lead to the checkered taking his second checkered flag of the night, but his only victory after the previous disqualification. Moyer finished second with Craig Jacobs third and Todd Cooney fourth.

Paul Anderson took the early lead in the IMCA stock car feature until passed by Greg Shepherd. Two laps later, Shepherd left the race with a flat tire and Russ McCombs inherited first place. Following a late race restart, Steve Jackson moved under McCombs in turn four and was the victor. Following him to the finish were McCombs, Don Killen, and Anderson.

In the Karl Chevrolet NDTR trucks, Jeff Johnson led most of the race for his second win of the season. Mark Fee finished second with Brett Moyer in third and Rick Warden fourth.

In the first of three IMCA hobby stock features, Jeremy Embrey claimed the early lead. On the fourth lap Bill Bonnett took the lead and on the following lap, Craig Roberts squeezed past into the lead. Roberts won with Bonnett in second, Rusty Groves in third, and Jeff Hovick was fourth.

In the second hobby main, Larry Embrey was the leader until Rick Gladson passed him at the halfway point and went on to win. Bill Dawson was second, Embrey third, and Michael Thomas finished fourth. After the race, Bob Green claimed Dawson’s engine.

In the final hobby stock race of the evening, Gene Behle passed Carl Knight on the second lap and showed the way to the checkered. Knight was second, John Gilbert third, and Adam Hagen was fourth.

Next Friday night is the last night of regular racing as season championships are scheduled for July 27th. The normal line-up of IMCA late models, modifieds, stock cars, and hobby stocks, along with NDTR dirt trucks will compete. Hot laps begin at 6:00 pm followed by racing.
