Iowa State Fair Speedway

Wins to Cooney, Farren Jr., Anderson, and Moyer

by David Wilkinson

(Des Moines, Iowa) (July 20, 2001) Todd Cooney missed the huge pileup of IMCA late models at the start of the second lap and went on to win the feature Friday night at the Iowa State Fair Speedway. Dave Farren Jr. got his picture taken with his new car after winning the IMCA modified main and for the fifth time this season Jeff Anderson took the IMCA stock car feature. Brett Moyer won the Karl Chevrolet NDTR truck feature and IMCA hobby stock features went to Rusty Groves and the grandfather and grandson duo of Larry and Jeremy Embrey. Randy Bryan won the dwarf car feature.

The IMCA late model feature started normal enough as Randy Faux took the lead from his pole position start. As cars came down the front stretch, one car lost power going into turn one and cars rnning behind got caught up in a melee that cut the field in half. Two cars rolled over and when the mess was cleaned up, ten of the 18 starters continued to race. No one was injured. Todd Cooney was in seventh when the race was restarted and passed Faux four laps later for the lead and raced to an easy victory. Jarod Fleck was second, Faux third, and Chris Smyser fourth.

Brian George led the first two laps of the IMCA modified main and then, as the caution flag was thrown, pulled off with car troubles. Greg Cox led the cars to the restart, but it was Dave Farren Jr. who was in the lead at the end of that lap and then the race. Richie Gustin was second, Danny Wallace third, and Russ Gladson fourth.

In the IMCA stock car feature, Ross McCombs jumped into the early lead and looked very strong. Behind McCombs, a tight race was brewing for second between Paul Anderson, Steve Jackson and Jeff Anderson as they drove together for two laps. A restart on the 11th lap provided Anderson a chance to get under McCombs and as they traded sheet metal, Anderson pulled into the lead and then held off McComb’s challenge. McComb finished second just ahead of Steve Jackson and Don Killen was fourth.

The Karl Chevrolet NDTR truck feature had three leaders in the first three laps – Randy Strong, Kyle Leonard, and Sean Allen. Mark Fee was right behind Allen. Bret Moyer was close by the front two on the third lap and then dropped back a great distance. However, by lap 13, Moyer moved under Allen in turn three for the lead and outraced him to the finish. Mark Fee was third and Randy Strong fourth.

Jeremy Embrey passed Carl Knight for the lead in the first IMCA hobby stock feature and then was able to withstand the late race challenge of Rick Gladson for the victory. Roberts was third and Jason Murray fourth.

Rusty Groves passed Ryan Lundy after a third lap restart and easily won the second hobby main. Bill Bonnett was second with Frank Grove third and Darcy Hoch fourth. The final hobby feature was led green to checkered by Larry Embrey followed by James May, Adam Hagen, and John Gilbert.

In their third visit of the season, 25 dwarf cars took the track as Randy Bryan won with Mike Morrill second and Bob Helm third.

The racing season concludes next Friday with season championships for IMCA late models, modifieds, stock cars, and hobby stocks, along with NDTR dirt trucks. Dwarf cars will be making their fourth appearance of the season. Hot laps begin at 6:00 pm and will be followed by racing.
