Fleck, Jackson and Davis

by David Wilkinson

(Des Moines, Iowa) (July 6, 2001) The father-son duo of Bill Davis Sr. and Bill Davis Jr. finished first and second in the IMCA modified feature Friday night at the Iowa State Fair Speedway where warm and humid weather greeted fans and racers. Jarod Fleck took the win in his IMCA late model and Steve Jackson bested Jeff Anderson in side-by-side action in the IMCA stock car main. IMCA hobby stock wins went to Ryan Lundy, Rick Gladson, and Larry Embrey as Cliff Barber won the special dwarf car race.

The IMCA late model feature was run green to checkered without interruption as Jarod Fleck moved into the lead and then zigzagged through the back runners to finish ahead of Jason Friesen, Todd Cooney, and Darrell DeFrance.

Russ Gladson jumped to the early lead in the 29-car IMCA modified feature. Gladson was chased by Bill Davis Sr. who finally passed Gladson on the 13th lap of the 15-lap race. Just after Davis passed him, Gladson bobbled slightly allowing room for two other cars to pass. Bill Davis Jr. finished second with Rod Scheuermann third and Gladson fourth.

Mike Goff was in front at the start of the IMCA stock car main until Jeff Anderson passed him on lap five. For the next two laps, Anderson and Steve Jackson ran side-by-side with Jackson slipping by Anderson for the lead on lap eight. Anderson ran at Jackson’s rear bumper, pulled along side of him twice, but it was Jackson who prevailed at the end of this close race. Finishing third was Maynard Davis III with Paul Anderson in fourth.

In the Karl Chevrolet NDTR dirt truck feature, Mark Fee passed Jeff Luke on the third lap and won his third feature of the season. Brett Moyer, who won the previous two weeks, finished second with Lou Sipolt third and Matt Waugh in fourth.

In the last of the three IMCA hobby stock features, veteran driver Larry Embrey started on the tail of the 19-car field. He maneuvered through the field and passed Carl Knight for the lead halfway through the race and went on to win followed by Keith Williamson, Troy Hudson, and Don Wear.

In the first hobby main, Ryan Lundy passed Bob Green on a second lap restart and held off the challenge of Joey Jones for the victory. Darcy Hoch finished third with Craig Roberts in fourth.

In the second hobby feature, Rick Gladson passed Gene Behle on the second lap and opened a full straightaway lead on his way to the checkered. Behle finished second with Adam Hagen third and Bill Bonnett fourth.

Dwarf cars returned for the second appearance at the speedway and Cliff Barber won again. Drawing the pole position for the start, he vaulted into the lead and was never challenged. Randy Bryan finished in second with Fred Schimmels third and Tim Love in fourth.

The fairgrounds racing season has entered its final month of regular racing for the 2001 with season championships scheduled for July 27th. Next Friday the speedway will host the line-up of IMCA late models, modifieds, stock cars, and hobby stocks, along with NDTR dirt trucks. Hot laps begin at 6:00 pm and will be followed by racing.
