Allen Captures Third Straight Truck Feature

At the Iowa State Fair Speedway

by David Wilkinson

(Des Moines, Iowa) (June 1, 2001) Sean Allen guided his KARL Chevrolet NDTR dirt truck to his third straight victory Friday night at the Iowa State Fair Speedway. A late afternoon thunderstorm caused the program to begin 30 minutes late, yet the full program of races for over 130 cars in five classes finished right at the 10:30 pm city curfew. Other winners were Steve Borts in his IMCA late model, Denny Stoneburner in his IMCA modified, Jeff Anderson in the IMCA stock cars, Keith Williamson and Jason Murray in the two IMCA hobby stock features.

In the IMCA late model feature, Steve Borts lead every lap of the caution-free race to take the checkered just one car length ahead of Rob Toland. Borts jumped into the lead from his front row start and set a torrid pace. Toland, moving through the field from the fourth row jostled with Billy Allen for second for two laps and after passing Allen started to stalk Borts. He pulled along Borts on lap 14 of the 18-lap feature and tried to pass him several times. Coming out of turn three on the last lap, Toland briefly put the nose of his car ahead of Borts, but Borts was able to pull ahead for the victory. Billy Allen ran third and Todd Inman was fourth.

Dave Mongar took the early lead in the IMCA stock car feature. Jeff Anderson, starting in the tenth position, charged through the field, passed Todd Fisher for second on lap three, then moved under and by Mongar on the next lap. Anderson pulled away from the pack and the race was second. With a last lap pass, Steve Jackson passed Fisher for second with Kent Knopf finishing fourth.

The IMCA modified main was marred with collisions early in the race. Early leader Rod Scheurermann left the race with a flat tire and Denny Stoneburner took his place and never looked back. The finishing order was Stoneburner, Danny Wallace, Kevin Lovell, and Kendall Sather.

The KARL Chevrolet NDTR dirt truck feature was won by Sean Allen with Brett Moyer in second, Ben Nading in third, and Steve Phillipsen fourth.

In the first IMCA hobby stock main, Jason Murray passed Mike Thomas on third lap and then held off the late race challenge of Rick Gladson for the win. Finishing third was Melissa Johnson with Jeff Featherstone in fourth.

Ryan Lundy led the first seven laps of the second IMCA hobby stock feature. With two laps to go, the leaders reshuffled positions with Keith Williamson ending up front. At the finish it was Williamson, Bill Bonnett, Don Wear, and Adam Hagen.

Racing continues next Friday with hot laps beginning at 6:00 pm followed by racing.
