Smyser, Logue, Jackson, Moyer, Behle, Groves, and Lundy

by David Wilkinson

(Des Moines, Iowa) (June 29, 2001) Chris Smyser picked up his fourth IMCA late model win of the year at the Iowa State Fair Speedway Friday night. Brett Moyer claimed his second straight win in NDTR dirt trucks. John Logue won the IMCA modified main and Steve Jackson picked up the victory in IMCA stock cars. IMCA hobby stock features went to Gene Behle, Rusty Groves, and Ryan Lundy.

Billy Allen jumped into the lead at the start of the IMCA late model feature, but car problems forced him to leave the track on the fifth lap. Gordy Grubb moved into first place and soon discovered that Chris Smyser was on his tail. After trying for several laps, Smyser made a successful move in turns three and four and pulled away from Grubb and the field for the win. Grubb finished second with Ron Cochran third and Darrell DeFrance fourth.

Rod Scheuermann maneuvered his car into the lead at the start of the IMCA modified feature. John Logue, who started in middle the pack, craftily moved his car forward and the two cars ran side-by-side for two laps until Logue finally got clear of Scheuermann. Logue won followed by Scheuermann, Bill Davis Jr., and Josh Truman.

In an accident-marred IMCA stock car feature, Steve Jackson got the lead early, held off Jeff Anderson who had to leave the race early, and picked up the victory. Travis Hansaker finished second, Don Killen third and Dave Mongar was fourth.

Three A-mains were held for the 56 IMCA hobby stocks in attendance with each race featuring one leader who ran green to checkered. Gene Behle won the first feature with Jeff Featherstone finishing second, Dave Reed third, and Rob Allison fourth.

Rusty Groves won the second hobby main followed by Don Wear, Craig Roberts, and Darcy Hoch. The third event went to Ryan Lundy who finished ahead of Rick Gladson, Bill Bonnett, and Eric Stanton.

In the Karl Chevrolet NDTR dirt truck feature, Brett Moyer passed Sean Allen at the halfway point and claimed the win. Jeff Johnson nosed out Allen at the checkered for second with Jim Turner finishing fourth.

Racing continues next Friday with the line-up of IMCA late models, modifieds, stock cars, and hobby stocks, along with NDTR dirt trucks. Hot laps begin at 6:00 pm and will be followed by racing.
