Smyser and Anderson Win Again

by David Wilkinson

(Des Moines, Iowa) (June 8, 2001) It was the first night of beautiful weather Friday night at the Iowa State Fair speedway even though it was the seventh racing event of the season. Chris Smyser won his second IMCA late model feature while Jeff Anderson claimed his third IMCA stock win feature. Other winners were Rod Scheuermann in IMCA modifieds, Ryan Lundy and Adam Hagen in IMCA hobby stocks, and Steve Phillipsen in the Karl Chevrolet NDTR dirt truck main.

J.J. Scott jumped into the lead at the start of the IMCA late model feature and was chased by Chris Fontana. Halfway through the 18-lap race, Chris Smyser moved into the lead and ran away from the rest of the field for the victory. Fontana finished second with Todd Cooney third and Craig Jacobs fourth.

The third time was the charm for Rod Scheuermann as the first two tries to begin the IMCA modified main resulted in major pileups in turn two. Scheuermann moved into the lead and ran nearly ½ of a lap ahead of the field. In a close battle, Dave Farren best Kendall Sather for second with Matt Donald finishing fourth.

In the IMCA stock car feature, Jeff Anderson moved from his tenth place start to second place by the second place and moved past Maynard Davis III into the lead on lap six. He was never challenged. Steve Jackson finished second; Davis III was third, and Greg Shepherd fourth.

In the Karl Chevrolet NDTR dirt truck feature, there were three leaders with Matt Waugh leading first. Ben Nading passed him midway in the race and then Steve Phillipsen passed him on the white-flag lap and took the checkered followed by Jeff Johnson, Nading, and Allen.

The first IMCA hobby stock began with Gary Stajcar taking a wild ride as his car hit the front wall, rolled and flipped at the start of the race. When the race restarted, Adam Hagen moved into the lead and never gave it up. Joey Jones finished second with Scott Berehnema third and Craig Roberts in fourth.

In the second hobby stock main, Dennis Reid Jr. took the early lead until Richie Gustin, who started tenth, passed him on lap four. Gustin was running strong until his car went up in blue smoke on the eighth lap allowing Ryan Lundy into first. The final order of finish was Lundy, Keith Williamson, Reid, and Darcy Hoch.

Racing continues next Friday with the line-up of IMCA late models, modifieds, stock cars, and hobby stocks, along with NDTR dirt trucks. Hot laps begin at 6:00 pm and will be followed by racing.
