DeFrance, Sather, Killen, Buehnman and
Allen

(Des Moines, Iowa) (May 11, 2001) Over 150 cars competed Friday night at the Iowa State Fair Speedway in a wild night of racing action. When the dust settled, Darrell DeFrance ran away with the IMCA late model victory while Don Killen edged a victory in a slam-bang finish of the IMCA stock car feature. Kendall Sather took home the win in the IMCA modified main and Scott Buehneman won only IMCA hobby stock main of the evening. Sean Allen took the checkered in the NTDR dirt truck feature.
Twenty-eight IMCA late models took the starter’s green at the beginning of the race, but it took four more tries to complete the first lap. After a large pile-up on the fourth attempt, only18 cars completed the first official lap with Darrell DeFrance in the lead. DeFrance never looked back and the race finished without a caution. The top finishers were DeFrance, Rick Gustin, Todd Cooney, and Mike Smith.
Steve Jackson took the lead in the IMCA stock car feature from his front row starting position and was chased the entire race. For the first half of the race, Maynard Davis III pressured Jackson and then was joined by Don Killen. On lap eight, Jackson drifted high in turn three as Killen moved low, but it was Davis who was in the lead coming down the stretch. Bad luck for Davis as a tire went flat on the next lap giving first place back to Jackson. Killen kept trying and on the last lap pulled along Jackson and they raced side-by-side with Killen on the inside. Coming out of turn four, the wide track seem to narrow as the cars got together. Neither driver let up as Killen, starting a sideways slide, beat Jackson by ½ car length to the checkered. Tim Baker was third and Danny Hill fourth.
Bill Davis Sr. moved his IMCA modified to the lead at the start of the IMCA main event. He was not alone as Kendall Sather kept coming at him. A broken shock on Davis’s mod made it easier for Sather to pass him on a middle race restart. For the next three laps, Jimmy Gustin and John Logue tried to pass Sather, until Gustin dropped back several places when the white flag was thrown. Logue battled fearlessly, but it was Sather who prevailed followed by Logue, Dave Farren Jr., and Russ Gladson.
The Karl Chevrolet NDTR dirt truck main was captured by Sean Allen with Mark Fee in second, Brett Moyer third, and Lou Sipolt fourth. Fifteen trucks competed in this event during this second year of the NDTR series.
Scott Buehnmen passed Rick Gladson to win the IMCA hobby stock feature with Gladson second, Jason Murray in third, and Eric Stanton fourth. Frank Grove walked away after his car rolled during the race. After the race, Bill Dawson claimed Buehnmen’s engine. Two additional hobby stock features were not run due to the track’s 10:30 curfew.
Racing continues next Friday with the two postponed IMCA hobby stock features at 6:30 followed by a full show with IMCA late models, modifieds, stock cars, hobby stocks, and NDTRA dirt trucks.
