Iowa State Fair Championships

to Logue and Brown

by David Wilkinson

(Des Moines, Iowa) (August 10, 2002)  The Iowa State Fair Championships for modifieds, stock cars, and hobby stocks provided lots of excitement for drivers and fans Saturday morning and afternoon.  John Logue captured the modified trophy and Rick Brown easily won stock car championship.  Hobby wins went to Bill Bonnett, Bill Richards, and Mark Daughenbaugh.

On hand to compete in the stock car class, Des Moines native and NASCAR Winston Cup driver Shawna Robinson had mechanical difficulty that limited her competition. Driving John Hunnell’s stock car, the transmission went out during her heat race and she was finished racing for the day. However, she gave an interview to announcer Tim Trier and then flagged a hobby stock race.  After completing her flagging stint, she went into the grandstands and signed autographs for all who wanted one.

A terrifying accident occurred in a modified heat, when Greg Cox hit the front wall coming off turn four.  The car was destroyed as the rear axle and wheels, the fuel cell, and the battery all flew off the car. Cox was helped from the car and walked away.  Later, he was transferred to a local hospital for examination.

The annual Saturday race at the Fair is known for the dust.  It was a muddy and wet track that was packed, but by feature time the dust was thick. Drivers slowed as they entered turns and cars back in the pack moved to the inside to find a clear view.

In modified main, Russ Gladson took the lead at the drop of the green from his starting position on the pole.  Immediately, Joe McBirnie began chasing Gladson and was on his tail for first eleven laps.  Following a restart on lap 12, John Logue passed McBirnie and then passed Gladson on the outside of turns three and four for the lead.  Logue, who started tenth, pulled away and won the 25-lap race.  McBirnie finished second, Rick Gustin third, and Gladson fourth.

Rick Brown made it look easy as led all 20 laps of the stock car feature. After a first lap restart, he moved into the lead from his second row starting spot and the race was run without another caution. Brown won with a six second advantage over second place Steve Jackson. Tim Baker was third and Greg Shepherd fourth.

In the first of three hobby stock features, T. J. Criss took the lead in this accident-marred race. By the third lap, Bill Bonnett, who started in the fourth row, moved into second and set his eyes on Criss.  Halfway through this 15-lap contest, Bonnett ran side-by-side with Criss and then passed him.  Bonnett held on until the checkered and was followed to the flag by Criss, Adam Hagen, and Justin Maschke.

In the second hobby main, Bill Richards passed Randy Casner on a restart of the second lap and never looked back. Richards won with Casner second, Frank Grove third, and Justin Burmeister fourth.

Scott Durlin took the early lead in the final hobby feature with Mark Chance chasing him.  On the seventh lap, Chance pulled within a car length of Durlin, but then left the race with a flat tire on the next lap. By this time, Mark Daughenbaugh, who started in the sixth row, had worked his way through the field and had Durlin in his sight.  On the white flag lap, Daughenbaugh moved outside of Durlin in the turns and passed him on the final lap.
