Iowa State Fair Speedway Champions
Cooney, Wallace, and Jackson

by David Wilkinson

(Des Moines, Iowa) (July 26, 2002) The season championships Friday night concluded the regular season at the Iowa State Fair Speedway as Todd Cooney won his ninth IMCA late model feature. Danny Wallace won the IMCA modified main, Steve Jackson took the IMCA stock car race, with Bill Bonnett winning the IMCA hobby stock main for seventh time this season. Brett Moyer won the Karl Chevrolet NDTR dirt truck main and Mike Morrill won the feature for dwarf cars.

Todd Cooney led all 18 laps of the IMCA late model feature. Midway in the race, Craig Jacobs closed the gap briefly, and then Cooney took off for an easy win. Jacobs finished second, Steve Borts third, and Ryan Griffith fourth. Cooney won the season point's race followed by Jacobs, Borts, and Griffith.

In the IMCA modified feature, Danny Wallace took the early lead and was chased by Ron VerBeek who pulled along when Wallace went high in turn four on the fourth lap. Wallace recovered and pulled away from the field for a five-second win over Bill Davis Jr. Davey Farren was third and Kevin Lovell fourth. Wallace captured the season point's title followed by Davis, VerBeek, and Farren.

In the IMCA stock car main, the front row starters, Steve Jackson followed by Don Killen, led all the way to the checkered. Maynard Davis III finished third with Travis Hansaker fourth. Jackson won the season points title followed by Killen, Greg Shepherd, and Hansaker.

Bill Bonnett passed Rick Gladson on the ninth lap of the IMCA hobby stock feature. The race ended on the next lap under a yellow-checker. Early in the race, Gladson had been challenged by Ryan Lundy as Bonnett moved steadily forward from fifth. Lundy left the race midway as a result of crash. Finishing third was Randy Casner and Bob Green was fourth. Gladson still won the season points championship with Mark Chance in second and Lundy third with Casner fourth. After the race, Chance claimed Green's engine. In a B-feature, Karen Cash walked away, smiling, from a violent rollover on the front stretch.

Brett Moyer moved his Karl Chevrolet NDTR dirt truck into first from his starting spot outside the front row. For the first several laps, he was chased by Sean Allen and Mark Fee, but pulled away and won easily. Fee finished second, Allen third, and Randy Strong fourth. Allen ended up the point's champion followed by Moyer, Fee, and Randy Strong.

Mike Morrill took the win in a dwarf car special appearance. Fred Schimmels finished second, Randy Bryan third, and Bob Thomas fourth.

Two special races will be held during the Iowa State Fair. On Saturday morning, August 10th, a non-sanctioned show featuring modifieds, stock cars, and hobby stocks will start with hot laps at 9:00 am with races to follow. On Tuesday, August 13th, the Deery Brothers Summer Series for IMCA late models returns to the track with a supporting program featuring modifieds, stock cars, dirt trucks, and dwarf cars. Hot laps at 5:30 PM with races scheduled for 6:30 PM.
