Iowa State Fair Speedway
Tapper, Gustin, Todd and Waugh Win

by David Wilkinson

(Des Moines, Iowa) (July 5, 2002) Kelly Tapper won his second IMCA late model feature of the year Friday night at the Iowa State Fair Speedway. Richie Gustin captured the IMCA modified feature and Mike Todd took the IMCA stock car main. Matt Waugh won the Karl Chevrolet NDTR dirt trucks main and IMCA hobby stock victories went to John Watson, Ryan Lundy, and Mark Daughenbaugh. In a special appearance by the Central Vintage Racing Association vintage cars, Rod Foster took the main.

Kelly Tapper vaulted into the lead from his second row start and led all 18-laps of the IMCA late model feature. Tapper dominated the race with Todd Cooney finishing second. A distant third was Craig Jacobs with Ronnie Binning fourth.

In the IMCA modified feature, it looked like Kevin Stoa was going to duplicate his win from last week. His car was fast and he quickly built a lead the length of a straightaway. Then, as has occurred previously this year, mechanical problems forced him to drop out of the race. Richie Gustin, who started in tenth, had moved into second and he ran away with the race and took the checkered first followed by Chris Wilke, Russ Gladson, and Kevin Lovell.

Mike Todd passed David Mongar on the fourth lap of the IMCA stock car main and built a huge lead. On lap nine, the race was stopped as Craig Robert's new car ended on top of the wall in turn three. This allowed Steve Jackson, who was running second, to close the distance to Todd. When the race resumed, it was run under the track rule that limits each race to one minute per lap. When the green waved, the race would run to the checkered, or if a caution occurred, the race would end on a yellow-checkered. On the restart, a car spun bringing out the yellow-checkered. The finishing order was Todd, Jackson, Matt Pinegar, and Travis Hansaker.

John Watson led all ten laps of the first IMCA hobby stock feature finishing ahead of Bill Bonnett, Justin Maschke, and Bill Dawson.

Ryan Lundy passed Randy Bradshaw on the fifth lap and won the second hobby stock main. Don Wear finished second, Bradshaw third, and John Thompson was fourth. After the race, Gene Behle claimed Lundy's engine.

Mark Daughenbaugh led the final hobby feature wire-to-wire finishing just ahead of Rick Gladson. Jeff Featherstone was third and Bruce Wolfe was fourth.

Mark Waugh stayed in front of the rubbing and crashing in the Karl Chevrolet NDTR dirt truck feature and led 14 of the 15 laps. Al Thayer raced side-by-side with Waugh and moved ahead on lap 13. But Waugh was not to be denied, he reclaimed the lead and led the pack to the finish. Thayer was second, Jeff Luke third and Lou Sipolt was fourth.

The Central Vintage Racing Association vintage car special race was won by Rod Foster with Mark David finishing second and Walt Ryan third.

Racing continues next Friday with the line-up of IMCA late models, modifieds, stock cars, and hobby stocks, along with NDTR dirt trucks. Hot laps begin at 6:00 pm and will be followed by racing.
