Iowa State Fair Speedway
Cooney & Wallace Continue to Dominate

by David Wilkinson

(Des Moines, Iowa) (June 21, 2002) Todd Cooney won his seventh IMCA late model win of the year Friday night at the Iowa State Fair Speedway. Other repeat winners were Danny Wallace, IMCA modifieds; Randy Strong NDTR dirt trucks; and Frank Grove, Mark Chance, and Bill Bonnett in IMCA hobby stocks. Steve Jackson, who is leading the IMCA stock cars in points, won his first feature of the year at the track.

Randy Faux led the first half of the 18-lap IMCA late model feature until passed by Darrell DeFrance. Two laps later, Todd Cooney passed DeFrance and pulled away for the win. Steve Borts, DeFrance, and Ryan Griffith followed Cooney to the finish.

Long-time veteran IMCA modified ace Dave Farren moved his car into the lead at the start and was working to hold off a challenge by Brian George. On lap seven, Danny Wallace, who started in 12th, passed both of them for the lead. Wallace ran easily until challenged in the last few laps by Richie Gustin, who was able to pull ahead in the turns, but Wallace regained the lead on the straightaway. The top four finishers were Wallace, Gustin, Greg Cox, and Davey Farren.

In the IMCA stock car main, Randy Killen took the lead from his pole position and was passed on the second lap by Dennis Kimmel. On a restart on the seventh lap, Steve Jackson, who had worked his way into second, vaulted by Kimmel and kept widening his lead as he raced to the checkered. Todd Fisher finished in second, Travis Hansaker in third, and John Hunnell was fourth.

In the Karl Chevrolet NDTR dirt trucks feature, Randy Strong passed Mike Hoffman coming out of turn four on the second lap and led the rest of the race. Sean Allen ran second with Al Thayer in third and Ben Nading fourth.

In the first IMCA hobby stock main, Frank Grove used his front row start to his advantage as he led wire-to-wire followed by Randy Castner, John Watson, and Bill Dawson.

In the second hobby feature, John Thoren led the first lap, but Ryan Lundy, who started in the 10th spot, passed Thoren for the lead on the second lap. For the last half of the ten-lap race, Mark Chance stalked Lundy and tried to find a way past him. Finally on the ninth lap, Chance was able to run low through the turns and passed Lundy. Chance was first to the checkered followed by Lundy, Don Wear, and Jeff Featherstone. After the race, Bob Green claimed Chance's engine.

The third IMCA hobby stock feature saw Gene Behle grab the early lead. Bill Bonnett moved his car near Behle and captured the lead on the sixth lap. The finish was Bonnett, Rick Gladson, Mark Daughenbaugh, and Adam Hagen.

Racing continues next Friday with the line-up of IMCA late models, modifieds, stock cars, and hobby stocks, along with NDTR dirt trucks. Hot laps begin at 6:00 pm and will be followed by racing.
