Iowa State Fair Speedway
Moro and Stoa Win!

by David Wilkinson

(Des Moines, Iowa) (June 28, 2002) It was a beautiful night for racing Friday night at the Iowa State Fair Speedway. Kevin Stoa, who has been plagued by various misfortunes this season, won his first IMCA modified feature of the season at the track. Tony Moro captured the IMCA late model main and, for the second week in a row, Steve Jackson raced away from the IMCA stock car field for the win. Mark Fee won the Karl Chevrolet NDTR dirt truck feature and IMCA hobby stock wins went to Ray Stock Jr., Rick Gladson, and Mark Daughenbaugh.

In the IMCA modified main, Brian George took the early lead until Kevin Stoa passed him on lap two. As has been the case all season, Stoa was fast. The difference this time is that neither a malfunction nor an accident took him out of the running. Several caution periods resulted in a re-start after lap 9 under the time limit rule. After the next lap, another incident occurred bringing out the yellow-checkered for Stoa, George, Bill Davis Jr., and Dave Farren.

Tony Moro led the IMCA late model feature from green to checkered, but it was not an easy win. Ryan Griffith challenged Moro for the last half of the race and was able to pull aside Moro in turns one and two on the last five laps, but Moro reclaimed the lead as they entered the backstretch. Finishing behind Moro and Griffith were Craig Jacobs and Todd Cooney.

In the IMCA stock car main, Steve Jackson, who started twelfth, passed Randy Killen on the sixth lap and roared away from the field for an easy victory. Travis Hansaker finished second a full straightaway behind Jackson with Don Killen third and Randy Killen fourth. Following the race, Randy Killen's motor was claimed.

Two early accidents reduced the field in the NDTR dirt truck feature. Mark Fee passed Mike Hoffman on the second lap and led the cars to the finish for his second win of the year. Randy Strong ran second with Sean Allen in third and Brett Moyer in fourth.

The first of the three IMCA hobby stock features had the closest finish of the season. Ray Stock Jr. inherited the lead when leader Randy Bradshaw spun out on the second lap. Mark Chance, who started in the sixth row, worked his way up to second and as they both charged for the checkered flag, Stock beat Chance by just five feet. Bob Green ended up third and Justin Maschke was fourth.

In the second hobby main, Bill Dawson passed Shawn Essex on the third lap, but shortly left the race with a flat tire. Rick Gladson moved to the front and was the eventual winner followed by Gene Behle, Brad Carl, and John Watson.

In the final IMCA hobby stock feature, Mark Daughenbaugh collected the win by leading the entire race. Frank Grove was second, Melissa Johnson third, and Randy Casner fourth. After the race, Danny Watson claimed Casner's engine.

Racing continues next Friday with the line-up of IMCA late models, modifieds, stock cars, and hobby stocks, along with NDTR dirt trucks. Hot laps begin at 6:00 pm and will be followed by racing.
