Iowa State Fair Speedway
Shootout Wins to McBirnie and Lundy

by David Wilkinson

(Des Moines, Iowa) (September 20, 2002) The Friday version of the two-night modified and hobby stock shootout at the Iowa State Fair Speedway started out with a bang as a full field of cars filled in the pits, lots of racing action, and unexpected finishes. The second night of the shootout was held at the Knoxville Raceway with anyone who can capture the features at each track picking up a nice bonus check.

Thirty-six modifieds registered for the shoot-off with 25 cars in the feature. Duane Peterson led the first lap, but Ron Barker led the final 24 laps to cross the finish line first. But the race wasn't final yet. As Barker declined an engine claim by Bill Davis Sr. and forfeited the win. Joe McBirnie had been chasing Barker for the last half of the race, even pulling next to him several times in the corners, but was unable to pass him and finished right behind Barker. After the disqualification of Barker, the top four were McBirnie, Bill Davis Jr., Greg Cox, and Bill Davis Sr.

Over 80 drivers competed for the hobby stock shoot-off. Eight heat races and three B-features were run qualifying 28 cars for the feature. Bill Bonnett vaulted into the lead from his front row starting spot and looked invincible at the beginning of the race. Then around the sixth lap, he slowed just a bit and Ryan Lundy blasted pass him on the eighth lap. Lundy pulled ahead and then was challenged by Mike Jones in the final laps. Lundy finished just ahead of Jones with Bonnett coming in a distant third and Tony Reicks fourth.

The finish of dirt truck feature was wild. Sean Allen passed Pat Fagen on the second lap and pulled away from the field. Halfway during the fifteen-lap feature, Brett Moyer closed on Allen and was challenging. Moyer was unable to pass Allen as he chased him. On the white-flag lap, the two cars went into turn one; Moyer went low and bumped Allen, turning him around. Moyer kept going. The yellow was flown and Moyer was black-flagged for rough driving. Since Allen brought out the caution, he was put in the back of the field. The yellow-checkered finish resulted in Pat Fagen winning followed by Carl Moyer, Lou Sipolt, and Ben Nading.

Mike Morrill passed Cliff Barber on the fourth lap of the ten-lap dwarf car feature and went on to win. Barber finished second, Randy Bryan third, and Mike Thomas fourth.

Devek Kirkland and Josh Kratoff won the two-driver cruiser main with Rod Richards and Bill Burkmier finishing second.
