Iowa State Fair Speedway Opener:

Farren Jr., Killen, and Moyer

by David Wilkinson

(Des Moines, Iowa) (April 11, 2003) The 2003 racing season opened Friday night at the Iowa State Fair Speedway with 136 cars racing in the four classes. The only defending track champion to take the checkered first was Rick Gladson in his IMCA hobby stock. Ryan Lundy and Adam Hagen captured the other two hobby stock mains. Dave Farren Jr. won the IMCA modified feature, Don Killen the IMCA stock car feature and Carl Moyer claimed the Karl Chevrolet dirt truck race.

Dave Farren Jr. drew the starting spot he wanted, outside on the front the row in the IMCA modified feature. Once the race started he never looked back and outran Rex Parkison to the finish. Finishing third was Pat Graham and fourth was Russ Gladson.

It looked like Steve Campbell’s night in the IMCA stock car feature. He was slated to start on the inside of the third row, when the two cars in front of him did not start the race as planned. One asked to be moved to the rear and the other did not start. All of sudden, Campbell sits on the pole. At the drop of the green, he charged ahead of Danny Hill for the lead. Then, John Hunnell moved up to Campbell’s back bumper and on lap nine, Hunnell moved under him, but was not able to pass. While these two were jockeying for position, Don Killen passed Hunnell and then passed Campbell for the lead two laps later. Killen, who started eighth, was the one driver all night adept enough to move his car through the field. The finishing order was Killen, Hunnell, Hill, Campbell, and Mike Todd. Hill was disqualified after the race.

Carl Moyer led at the beginning and end of the Karl Chevrolet dirt truck feature. On lap six, Randy Strong, passed Moyer and looked like the winner. But on lap 10, mechanical problems took Strong out of the race and Moyer inherited the lead. Moyer finished ahead of Lou Sipolt, Bugs Vincent, and Brett Moyer.

Ryan Lundy led green to checkered in the first IMCA hobby stock feature. Tim Gannon finished second, Randy Embrey third and Carl Knight fourth. Rick Gladson led all ten laps of the second IMCA hobby stock main and was followed to the finish by Mike Egenberger, Randy Bradshaw, and Randy Casner. In the third hobby feature, Adam Hagen passed Don Wear on the third lap to complete the ten laps ahead of Wear, John Watson, and Rob Allison.

Next Friday will be a special night for 360 sprint cars. Since they are no longer part of the weekly show, this 360 special provides an opportunity for drivers and fans to see the winged sprints on the historic half-mile. Terry McCarl leads the pack of drivers looking for the win. The special will be supported by the weekly program of IMCA modifieds, IMCA stock cars, IMCA hobby stocks, and Karl Chevrolet dirt trucks start with hot laps at 6:15 followed by racing.
