Iowa State Fair Speedway Wins to

Smith, Parkison, Killen and Moyer

by David Wilkinson

(Des Moines, Iowa) (July 11, 2003) For the fourth time this season, Mike Smith won the IMCA late model main at the Iowa State Fair Speedway Friday. Rex Parkison won the IMCA modified feature, Don Killen the IMCA stock car main, and Carl Moyer won the Karl Chevrolet dirt truck feature. Steve Jones Jr., Keith Williamson, and Chad Cooney collected IMCA hobby stock victories.

Joe Jones took the early lead in the IMCA late model feature. On lap 12 of the 18-lap race, Mike Smith, who started twelfth, passed Jones for the lead. He was able to withstand the charge of Steve Borts to take the checkered first with Borts second, Ryan Griffith third and Todd Cooney fourth. Smith widened his season points lead over Craig Jacobs and Cooney.

Rex Parkison led all 15 laps of the IMCA modified main to pick up his first win of the season at the track. Dave Farren made a late charge and finished second as Danny Wallace was third and Melissa Johnson fourth.

In the IMCA stock car race, Travis DeWitt took the lead at the start of the race. Don Killen who started twelfth and Steve Jackson who started eleventh, were moving through the field while DeWitt held of the challenge of David Foster. By the 11th lap, Killen had moved into second and Jackson third. On the next lap, Killen’s bold move to the inside on entering turn third allowed him to pass DeWitt. Jackson followed. Killen held off Jackson’s late race attack for the victory with Jackson finishing second, DeWitt third, and Foster fourth. In season points, Killen now leads Jackson by five points.

It looked like a father and son first and second place finish in the Karl Chevrolet dirt truck feature, but it did not happen. Carl Moyer jumped into the lead from his third row place on the starting grid at the start. He maintained the lead all the way to the checkered for his second win of the year. His son Brett Moyer had moved into second in the last few laps, then mechanical problems took him out of contention on the last lap. Bugs Vincent finished second, Randy Strong third, and Sean Allen fourth.

The first IMCA hobby stock main started with a dual between John Thoren and Rob Allison for the lead. Thoren led the first three laps, Allison led the next four laps, and then Thoren moved back into first. During the next lap, Thoren left the race with a flat tire giving Allison the lead again. The race was restarted with a green-white-checkered and Allison, Gene Behle, and Steve Jones Jr. came out of turn four three-wide. Jones moved into first and he took the checkered ahead of Larry Embrey, Behle, and Ben Hoesing.

In the second hobby main, Keith Williamson and Randy Embrey dueled for the entire 10-lap race. Williamson won with Embrey second, Ryan Lundy third, and Ray Stock Jr. was fourth.

Chad Cooney led the entire race in the final hobby main and defied a late race challenge by John Watson. The finishing order was Cooney, Watson, Justin Maschke, and Bill Bonnett.

Racing continues next Friday evening with IMCA late models, modifieds, stock cars, and hobby stocks as well as Karl Chevrolet dirt trucks competing. Hot laps are at 6:00 PM with racing following around 7:00 PM.
