Iowa State Fair Speedway Winners

DeFrance, Davis Jr, Todd, and Moyer

by David Wilkinson

(Des Moines, Iowa) (July 18, 2003) The track was fast and tacky Friday night at the Iowa State Fair Speedway. Winners were Darrell DeFrance, IMCA late models; Bill Davis Jr., IMCA modifieds; Mike Todd, IMCA stock cars; and Brett Moyer, Karl Chevrolet dirt trucks. Chad Cooney, Ryan Lundy, and Bill Bonnett won IMCA hobby stock features.

The IMCA late model feature ran green to checkered without interruption. Scott Johnson snatched the early lead from Joe Jones. By lap four, Darrell DeFrance passed Johnson and distanced himself from the rest of the field. DeFrance took the checkered first followed by Steve Borts, Mike Smith, and Johnson. This was DeFrance’s first win of the season at the track this year. Smith’s finish allowed him to extend his points lead over Craig Jacobs and Todd Cooney.

The IMCA modified feature was similar to the late model event in that it ran without a caution period, had two leaders, a large gap between first and second places, and the winner won for the first time this year at the track. Pat Graham led the first third of the race and Bill Davis Jr. led the final two-thirds for the win. Chris Wilke ran second, Dave Farren third, and Matt Donald nosed out Dave Farren Jr. for fourth. Greg Cox continues to lead in points with Davis Jr. second. After the race, Kevin Danielson claimed the engine of Wilke.

Mike Todd was upfront for all 15 laps of the IMCA stock car main. Todd was able to hold off a furious charge by Steve Jackson at the end of the race to collect the win. Greg Shepherd was third and Bob Daniels fourth. Season point’s leader Don Killen’s lead over Steve Jackson was reduced to two points.

Ben Nading led the first lap of the Karl Chevrolet dirt truck feature, but Brett Moyer passed him on a second lap restart. Moyer pulled away from the field. A midway caution, allowed Sean Allen to close the gap. Moyer was able to fend off Allen and he won with Allen second. Ben Nading finished third, but was officially scored as fifth due to a penalty for jumping a restart. Thus Pat Fagen finished third and Lou Sipolt finished fourth.

For the second week in a row, Chad Cooney led all ten laps of the first IMCA hobby stock main for the win. A wild battle occurred behind him between Mike Egenberger, Larry Embrey and Randy Embrey as they changed positions several times during the race. On the last lap, Egenberger passed Randy Embrey for second. Also, Randy was passed by his father Larry Embrey who finished third with Randy fourth. Greg Hower and two other drivers tried to jam their vehicles in the same portion of the front stretch and Hower rolled violently. He walked away.

The second IMCA hobby main saw a three-way battle between John Thoren, Ryan Lundy, and Rick Gladson. With Thoren leading, they ran three wide in turn four of lap six and then started to lap a car. As they moved around the back marker, Lundy was able to pass Thoren. The final finish was Lundy, Thoren, Gladson, and Gerald Snyder.

For the seventh time this season, Bill Bonnett won one of the three hobby features. This time he led the entire race with second going to Jason Murray, third to Keith Williamson, and fourth to Randy Casner.

The regular racing season ends next Friday evening with season championships on August 29. Two races will be held during the Iowa State Fair, the day of August 9th and the evening of August 12th. Hot laps on Friday are at 6:00 PM with racing following around 7:00 PM.
