Iowa State Fair Speedway Mid-Season Championship Victors

Smith, Cox, Jackson, Thayer, Maschke, and May

by David Wilkinson

(Des Moines, Iowa) (June 13, 2003) Friday the 13th was Mid-Season Championships night at the Iowa State Fair Speedway. As announcer Tim Trier wryly noted, “Some drivers are discovering the bad luck associated with Friday the 13th, yet others are missing that bad fortune.”  Things went well for the winners: Mike Smith, IMCA late models; Greg Cox, IMCA modifieds; Steve Jackson, IMCA stock cars; Al Thayer, Karl Chevrolet dirt trucks; Justin Maschke, IMCA hobby stocks; and Jimmy May, dwarf cars.

Todd Cooney nosed out Mike Smith to lead the first lap of the IMCA late model feature. Smith edged out Cooney on the second lap and then Smith ran away from the field in a race that ran green to checkered without a yellow. Smith picked up his third win of the season and increased his point lead to seven points ahead of Cooney, who finished second. Darrell DeFrance ran third and Craig Jacobs was fourth.

Greg Cox vaulted into the lead of the IMCA modified main ahead of Bill Davis Jr. Cox opened a nice lead and handled trouble when it arrived. On lap nine, he was approaching and preparing to lap the car of Jack Housely right in front of the grandstand. Housely moved to the inside bumping Cox as he was going trying to pass, forcing Cox to the bottom of the track. Cox put his foot back on the pedal and was able to hold off the challenge of Davis Jr., Pat Graham, and Kevin Lovell. Cox led all fifteen laps for his first-ever modified victory. Davis Jr. was second and Dave Farren Sr., who started 19th, finished third ahead of Graham. Davis Jr. holds a seven-point lead over Cox for the year.

In the IMCA stock main, Maynard Davis III excited the crowd by accepting promoter Mick Trier’s offer to move from a second row starting spot to the rear. He was given the opportunity to collect a double purse if he could win the race and the race was extended to 18 laps. At the start of the race, Steve Jackson took the lead ahead of point leader Don Killen. Davis III started 25th and moved to sixth by the tenth lap. While Davis III was moving through the pack, Jackson and Killen were racing fast and furious at the front. On a restart for lap fifteen, Killen powered by Jackson in turns one and two for the lead. Killen was running hard and looked the winner. On the last lap, coming out of turn two, the linkage between his accelerator pedal and the carburetor broke and he lost all power. Jackson and others flew by a frustrated Killen. Jackson picked up his second win of the season with Steve Campbell running a strong second, Matt Pinegar finishing third and Davis III fourth. Killen held on to a two-point lead over Jackson in the series.

In the Karl Chevrolet dirt truck feature, Sean Allen took the early lead. On the seventh lap, Al Thayer passed Allen. Six times in the last eight laps, Allen pulled aside or ahead of Thayer in turns one and two. But each time, using the high groove, Thayer pulled ahead and maintained his lead. The race ended with Thayer in first, Lou Sipolt in second, Sean Allen third, and Brett Moyer fourth. Pat Fagen accepted the challenge to start from the rear for the larger payoff. Fagen advanced to seventh before exiting the race with a flat tire on the twelfth lap. Allen maintains his point lead.

Justin Maschke led all ten laps of the IMCA hobby stock feature for his first win of the season. John Watson was running in the top ten when flames erupted under his hood on the seventh lap. He escaped from the flaming car in the infield. The race ran uninterrupted with the final finishing order of Maschke, Don Wear, Rick Gladson, and Frank Grove. The victory resulted in Maschke tying Grove for the points lead.

The dwarf cars joined the program for the mid-season championships. Bugs Vincent led the first lap and was passed by Jimmy May on the second lap. Vincent regained the lead on the fourth lap and May regained it on the following lap. May led all the way to the checkered for the win. Vincent finished second with Mike Morrill third and Mike Thomas fourth.

Racing continues next Friday evening with IMCA late models, modifieds, stock cars, and hobby stocks as well as Karl Chevrolet dirt trucks competing. Hot laps are at 6:00 PM with racing following around 6:30 PM.
