(Des
Moines, Iowa) (May 9, 2003) Todd Inman won his first-ever IMCA late model
feature Friday night at the Iowa State Fair Speedway. In the middle of several
days and nights of heavy rains, Friday was a beautiful, short-sleeve type of
evening. Ryan Lundy and Rick Gladson continued their domination of the IMCA
hobby stock division as each won their fourth straight feature of the season.
John Watson won the other hobby main. Other winners were John Davis, IMCA
modifieds, Maynard Davis III, IMCA stock cars, and Rick Clark in the Karl
Chevrolet dirt trucks.
Inman,
who has raced late models for three years, missed a mishap on the first lap that
involved at least eight cars. When the race restarted, Inman jumped into the
lead ahead of Nick Houseman. As the
race unfolded, Inman widen his lead and took the checkered one full straightaway
ahead of Todd Cooney, Houseman, and Steve Borts.
The
IMCA modified feature went to John Davis who was followed by Greg Cox and Chris
Wilke to the finish. Maynard Davis III completed a late race pass and captured
the IMCA stock car feature finishing ahead of Kent Knopf and Don Killen.
The Karl Chevrolet dirt truck main winner was Rick Clark who just held
off the challenge of Sean Allen. Brett Moyer finished third and Al Thayer
fourth.
The
first IMCA hobby stock feature saw Brian Meyer in the lead with Justin Maschke
just behind. Maschke moved into the lead briefly on the third lap, Meyer
regained it on the next lap, and then Ryan Lundy took the lead on the fifth lap.
Lundy held off a late challenge by Randy Embrey for his fourth straight win of
the season with Embrey finishing second, Meyer third, and Maschke fourth.
Michael
Thomas took the lead at the start of the second hobby feature. John Watson moved
closely behind him, but couldn’t find away around Thomas. On the sixth lap,
Thomas was off the gas and pulled off the track with Watson inheriting the lead.
The finish was Watson, Bill Bonnett, Dennis Reid Jr., and Frank Grove.
In
the third IMCA hobby main, Gerald Snyder passed Jim Phillipsen on the third lap
for first place. Rookie Chad Cooney started challenging Snyder and on the fifth
lap the two cars emerged from turn four, door-to-door, bumping and banging each
other. As they passed starter Bob Moses, Rick Gladson vaulted pass them. Gladson,
just like Lundy, held on for his fourth-straight victory of the season. Don Wear
was second, Ray Stock Jr. third, and Phillipsen fourth.
Racing
continues next Friday evening with IMCA late models, modifieds, stock cars, and
hobby stocks as well as Karl Chevrolet dirt trucks competing. Hot laps are at
6:00 PM with racing following.
