Iowa State Fair Speedway Shootout Victors:

Hughes, McCombs, and Bryan

by David Wilkinson

(Des Moines, Iowa) (September 19, 2003) Mother Nature aided track preparation for the Friday night Modified and Hobby Stock Fall Shootout at the Iowa State Fair Speedway with two inches of rain the day before. The track was tacky and fast for this event paired with competition on Saturday for modifieds and hobby stocks at Knoxville Raceway.. Mike Hughes won the modified feature with Russ McCombs taking the hobby race and Randy Bryan topping the dwarf car division.

The modified feature started with a fight for the lead between Mike Hughes, Brad Pinkerton, and John Vandenberg and ended with Mike Hughes easily winning. On the third lap, Pinkerton’s drive shaft broke with such force that the shaft smashed into the car and hit his arm. A few laps later Vanderberg broke and left the race. On each of the several restarts, Hughes easily pulled away from the competition. Bill Davis Jr. finished second, Brian Edel third, and Greg Cox fourth.

Don Wear jumped into the lead of the hobby stock main with Chris Webb right behind. The leaders were bunched together as the they passed the flag stand on the third trip around the half-mile circuit with Wear and Webb joined by Ross McCombs. McCombs, who started in the fifth row, took the lead on the next lap and widened his lead for several laps. Then for the second-half of the race, Brian Webb closed the gap and by the end of the race was stalking McCombs. McCombs held on for the win with Brian Webb second, Chris Webb third, and Shay Curtis fourth.

They were running five wide at times during the dwarf car feature as Randy Bryan ran away with the win. He led every lap and increased his lead throughout the 12-lap race. Leroy Clair finished second and Mike Morrill third.

Racing continues next Friday evening with the Fall Shootout for stock cars and Karl Chevrolet dirt trucks. Hot laps are at 6:00 PM with racing following around 7:00 PM.
