Cooney Edges Smyser in Late Model Thriller

(Des Moines, Iowa) (April 23, 2004) The IMCA late models roared on the track for the first time this season on Watters Autoland Night Friday at the Iowa State Fair Speedway and what a show it was! Todd Cooney and Chris Smyser exchanged the lead in the final laps of the 18-lap feature with Cooney finishing on top with Smyser second, Craig Jacobs third, and Darrell DeFrance fourth.
Joe McBirnie won the IMCA modified main with Russ Gladson second, Todd Shute third, and Chris Wilke fourth.
Todd Inman repeated his win from last week in the IMCA stock car feature. Following him to the finish were Paul Anderson, Kent Knopf, and John Hunnell.
The Karl Chevrolet dirt truck feature was won by Mike Stark for the second week in a row. Ben Nading finished second with Carl Knight third, and Carl Moyer fourth.
The three IMCA hobby stock features produced first time winners for the 2004 season. In the first feature, Steve Curtis won with Allen Van Gorp second, Bill Bonnett third, and Michael Davis fourth. In the second feature, Douglas Seidl took the checkered first followed by John Thoren, Danny Watson, and Brian Young. In the third feature, Rex Bonnett was the winner with Rick Gladson second, Justin Maschke third, and Ted Hill fourth.
Racing continues next Friday as Last Stop Beverage Night with IMCA late models, modifieds, stock cars, and hobby stocks as well as Karl Chevrolet dirt trucks competing. Hot laps are at 6:00 PM with racing following around 7:00 PM.
