For Immediate Release

Iowa State Fair Championships to

Jackson, Haglund, Shaffer, and Hagen

by David Wilkinson

(Des Moines, Iowa) (August 14, 2004) Saturday morning and afternoon races at the Iowa State Fair were marred by an accident that claimed the life of Maynard Davis III in an accident in the feature for the modified division. The modified race was the last of the card and it was cancelled.

In addition to modifieds, both stock cars and hobby stocks competed in the annual Iowa State Fair Championships

Thirty-three stock cars registered for the championships. The first two-thirds of the race was not very spirited as the top four cars raced advanced ahead of the field and then spread out. Todd Inman lead the first 17 laps and was followed by Nick Murty and Damon Murty. By lap four, Steve Jackson had moved into fourth. The caution flag was thrown on lap 15 and Damon Murty left the race prior to the restart. The last three laps were lively. The top three pulled away from the field after the restart and Steve Jackson passed Inman using the low groove on lap 18 of the 20-lap race. Murty and Inman exchanged places twice and the final order was Jackson, Inman, Nick Murty and Mike Todd.

Three features were run for the large field of hobby stocks on hand. In the first hobby feature, Jim Tull jumped into the lead from his third row starting position. Mark Haglund, who started twelfth, passed Tull on a restart of lap six. He used the high line to get around and then pulled away from the field to take the checkers first. Mark Chance finished second, Dustin Elliott third, and Tull fourth.

Rick Gladson skipped into the lead at the beginning of the second hobby main. On lap seven of the 15-lap race, Terry Shaffer passed Gladson on the low side of turns three and four. Shaffer distanced Gladson for several laps, and then Gladson started closing the gap over the final three laps. Shaffer held on for the victory followed by Gladson, Scott Durlin and Ted Hill.

The final hobby stock had four leaders in a very competitive race. Ray Stock Jr. took the lead from his pole starting position. By lap three, Bob Green overtook Stock. However, he pulled into the infield during a caution for the seventh lap. Justin Maschke inherited the lead, but had lots of company as Matt Inman, and Adam Hagen followed closely behind. On lap 9, Hagen passed Inman for second and on lap 12 he edged past Maschke. The final finish was Hagen first, Maschke second, Inman third and Bruce Wolfe fourth.

With the modifed race cancelled, the modifieds were paid on the basis of their position in the race line-up. That payoff-finish is listed below.
