Inman, Graham, Jackson and Stark are Winners

by David Wilkinson

(Des Moines, Iowa) (July 16, 2004) Hilltop Pawn Shop Night Friday at the Iowa State Fair Speedway provided lots of racing action, but started with a frightening accident. After the drop of the green in the first IMCA modified heat, the cars of Bill Davis Jr. and Kevin Lovell tangled leading to a violent accident with the cars flipping before coming to rest just before the flag stand. Davis was unconscious at first and the top of Lovell’s car had to be torn off in order to extract him quickly. Both were talking prior to being transported to the hospital. Later it was learned that Davis appeared to suffer no serious injuries, but was kept overnight for observation.

Mike Stark continued his dominance of the Karl Chevrolet dirt trucks with his fifth win a row and seventh of the season. Steve Jackson captured his sixth season victory in IMCA stock cars and wins were acquired by Todd Inman in IMCA late models and Pat Graham in IMCA modifieds. Steve Curtis secured his fourth IMCA hobby stock win with Kyle Webb and Todd Bass winning the other hobby features.

In the IMCA late model feature Todd Inman held off the challenge of John Vandenberg and led all 18 laps for the victory.  The race ran without a caution. Vandenberg was able to pull along aside Inman at times, but not get past him. Vandenberg finished second, Ryan Griffith third and Steve Borts fourth.

Veteran stock car driver and rookie IMCA modified driver Maynard Davis III took the lead of the modified feature. Within a few laps, he was engaged in a battle with Pat Graham for the lead.  Finally on lap eight, Graham passed the finish line one bumper ahead and took the lead .Graham held on to finish first as the race ended under the yellow and checkered flags after Merlin Kalar spun out  after the while flag had been displayed. Greg Cox finished second with Davis third and Tony Hofbauer fourth.

Tony Bass built up a sizable lead over Carl Yaw Jr. and the field in the early stage of the IMCA stock car main. By midway in the race, Steve Jackson, who started twelfth, had moved through the field and was able to pass Bass by taking the low groove in turns three and four. Jackson then ran away from the field to take the checkered first followed by Bass, Don Killen, and Yaw. After the race, John Hunnell claimed Killen’s engine.

Pat Fagen started on the pole and built a commanding lead in the Karl Chevrolet dirt truck feature. By the halfway point, Mike Stark had caught Fagen and was able to pull aside him, but not past. They ran side-by-side as they lapped slower cars, but as they came off the corners, Fagen had more momentum from the high side groove. Three laps from the finish, Fagen moved to the low side of turn three allowing Stark the high side. Stark made the pass and held on for the victory. The other top finishers were Fagen in second, Ben Nading third, and Mike Fagen fourth.

In the first IMCA hobby stock feature, Kyle Webb led twice. He started on the lead and led the first five laps until Jacob Murray passed him. Webb chased Murray and coming off turn four on the last lap, Murray ran a little high allowing Webb to overtake him and obtain the victory. Murray ran second with Rick Gladson third and Rob Allison fourth. After the race, Jamie Daughenbaugh claimed Allison’s engine.

Todd Bass led from green to checkered in the second hobby main. He was challenged the entire race by Curt Reed who finished second. Mike Egenberger was third and Adam Hagen fourth.

In the third hobby feature, Gene Behle led the first half of the race and Steve Curtis led the second half. A caution was thrown on the last lap leading to a yellow-checkered finish for Curtis with Behle second, Douglas Seidl third and Paul Wheeler fourth. After the race, Bob Allison claimed Wheeler’s engine.

Racing continues next Friday on Prairie Meadows Night with IMCA late models, modifieds, stock cars, and hobby stocks as well as Karl Chevrolet dirt trucks competing. Hot laps are at 6:00 PM with racing following around 7:00 PM.
