Inman Repeats with Gustin, Davis III and Moyer Winning

by David Wilkinson

(Des Moines, Iowa) (July 23, 2004) Friday was Prairie Meadows night at the Iowa State Fair Speedway and it was a beautiful night of racing. Bill Davis Jr., involved in a major modified crash last week, followed doctor’s orders and was in the stands watching. Todd Inman repeated his win from last week in IMCA late models and two drivers received their first wins for the this season at the track – Richie Gustin in IMCA modifieds and Maynard Davis III in IMCA stock cars. Bret Moyer picked up his fifth Karl Chevrolet dirt truck win and IMCA hobby stock wins were captured by Steve Curtis for the fifth time this season and Bill Bonnett for the sixth time.

In the IMCA late model feature, Todd Inman passed Tony Hofbauer on the third lap and led all the way to the checkered. Tony Moro made a charge for the lead after a restart, but Inman soon pulled away. Todd Cooney worked through the field from his start in the sixth row and finished third. Darrell DeFrance ran fourth. Next week is season championships for the late models and Cooney with 480 points holds a solid lead over his competitors. Craig Jacobs is second in points with 441, Steve Borts and Ryan Griffith have 425 points each, and Darrell DeFrance fills out the top five with 424 points.

Former national champion Dave Farren took the lead in the IMCA modified main from his second-row starting place. On the fifth lap of the 15-lap race, Richie Gustin passed Farren. Three laps later Mark Daughenbaugh moved around Gustin for the front. Then three laps from the finish, Gustin moved under and by Daughenbaugh to reclaim the lead. The finishing order was Gustin, Greg Cox, John Davis, and Travis Olson.

In the IMCA stock car feature, Maynard Davis III passed early leaders Matt Pinegar and Jeff Pederson by the third lap. Then he withstood a constant challenge by Don Killen for several laps. Mike Todd was running in second and Steve Jackson third near the end of the race, until Jackson went backwards on the last lap. The final finish was Davis, Todd, Killen and Danny Hill. After the race, Jackson claimed Davis’s engine.

In the Karl Chevrolet dirt truck feature, Ben Nading captured the lead on the first lap from his starting position in the fifth row and kept extending his lead over the pack. By lap three, Bret Moyer had moved into second and started lap-by-lap to narrow the lead. By lap ten, Moyer was close to Nading and two laps later Moyer pulled along side in Nading and then one lap later moved by him and held on for the win. The top four were Moyer, Nading, Mike Stark, and Carl Moyer. Moyer’s win stopped Stark’s five-week winning streak.

After a first lap incident that contributed to seven cars exiting the track, Danny Watson took the lead in the first IMCA hobby stock main. On lap four, Watson spun coming out of turn two and was unable to get moving again. Adam Hagen inherited the lead. After the restart, Steve Curtis was along side Hagen one lap later and took the lead on the next lap. Curtis lasted for the victory followed by Hagen, Allen Van Gorp, and Doug Seidl.

Kyle Webb took the lead in the second hobby main from his front row starting position. On lap seven of the ten-lap race, Rick Gladson moved into the lead. On the following lap, the leaders started lapping cars. On the ninth lap, Bill Bonnett passed Gladson to go ahead. They ran first and second with Webb third and Don Wear fourth.

Racing continues next Friday evening with season championships for the IMCA late models and a regular night of racing for IMCA modifieds, stock cars, and hobby stocks as well as Karl Chevrolet dirt trucks competing. Hot laps are at 6:00 PM with racing following around 7:00 PM.
