Cooney Takes Season Championship; Daughenbaugh, Jackson, Stark, Seidl, and Gladson Win

by David Wilkinson

(Des Moines, Iowa) (July 30, 2004) Season Championships for IMCA late models ran Friday night at the Iowa State Fair Speedway with Todd Cooney capturing the points championship and winning the season championship race. Steve Jackson captured his seventh IMCA stock car win of the season and Mike Stark won his eighth Karl Chevrolet dirt truck victory. Mark Daughenbaugh won his second IMCA modified feature. IMCA hobby stock winners were Doug Seidl and Rick Gladson.

No one starting in the first two rows accepted the JJAM challenge to start the race from the rear and attempt to win a double purse in the IMCA late model season championship. Todd Cooney started the race from the pole and led all 18 laps winning easily over Ryan Griffith, Darrell DeFrance, and Steve Borts. During the last half of the race, Borts found traction on the high side of the corners and passed several cars to finish fourth.

The IMCA modified feature began as a duel between Mark Daughenbaugh and Richie Gustin with Daughenbaugh in the lead. On the fourth lap, Gustin left the race with mechanical problems. Pat Graham moved into second and chased Daughenbaugh, but to no avail. Daughenbaugh picked up his second win of the season followed to the finish by Graham, Chris Wilke and John Davis. After the race, Kevin Danielson claimed Davis’s engine.

Jeff Pederson took the lead of the IMCA stock car feature with the drop of the green flag and was able to stay ahead of Justin Murphy. Steve Jackson, who started in the sixth row, was running second by halfway in the race. On lap 11, Jackson passed Pederson and led to the checkered. Pederson finished second, Matt Pinegar third, and Steve Campbell fourth. After the race, Maynard Davis III claimed Jackson’s engine and John Watson claimed Pederson’s engine. Pederson refused to sell his engine and was disqualified. Pederson lost his winnings for the evening, points earned for the season, and must pay a fine to IMCA before he can race again.

Twenty-two Karl Chevrolet dirt trucks hit the track for feature. Jim Phillipsen led at the start of the race with Pat Fagen challenging. Fagen passed Phillipsen on lap three. On the next lap, Mike Stark, who started tenth, was running side-by-side with Fagen and took the lead one lap later. Stark pulled away and won easily. Fagen ran second, Carl Moyer was third, and Lou Sipolt finished fourth.

As the IMCA hobby stocks passed the finish line for the first lap of the first feature, Doug Seidl and Bill Dawson raced door-to-door. Seidl then became clear leader and led all the way to the checkered. The race finished under yellow after Curtis Glover hit the front wall on the last lap. Most of the leaders had been scored prior to the yellow. The top four were Seidl, Dawson, Adam Hagen, and Don Wear. After the race, Rusty Groves was scored 16th instead of his tenth place finish. He had jumped the restart on lap four and was penalized six positions. Also, John Thoren claimed Seidl’s engine.

The second hobby main finished under a yellow-checkered as the time limit expired. Jamie Daughenbaugh led the first lap and then Mike Johnson was the leader. He was running ahead of a group including Jacob Murray, Matt Inman, and Rick Gladson. On the third lap, Johnson spun and three cars became entangled and brought out a caution flag. Quite a bit of time was needed to clean up the wreck. Murray inherited the lead for two laps he had to deal with the charge of Rick Gladson. They ran side-by-side for a lap and then Gladson lead the remainder of the race with Murray challenging. The final finish was Gladson, Murray, Justin Maschke, and Inman. After the race, Paul Wheeler claimed Gladson’s engine and David Castellano claimed Murray’s engine.

The nineteen-car dwarf car main had two leaders. Mike Thomas led the first two laps and Mike Morrill lead the final eight. Morrill repeated his win from the June 4 appearance of dwarf cars at the track. Thomas finished second, Brian Miller third, and Jimmy May fourth.

Two racing specials will be held during the Iowa State Fair. The Iowa State Fair Championships will be held on Saturday, August 14 for modifieds, stock cars and hobby stocks. Hot laps begin at 9:00 AM with racing following. On Monday night August 16, the Deery Brothers Summer Series for IMCA late models headlines the show supported by modifieds, hobby stocks, and Karl Chevrolet dirt trucks.

Friday night racing resumes with season championships for IMCA modifieds, stock cars, and hobby stocks as well as Karl Chevrolet dirt trucks on September 3rd. Hot laps are at 6:00 PM with racing following around 7:00 PM.
