Iowa State Fair Speedway

Stark Continues to Dominate Trucks

by David Wilkinson

(Des Moines, Iowa) (July 9, 2004) Sunset Auto Night was double-feature night at the Iowa State Fair Speedway Friday. On the previous week, rain hit the track just after completion of the first main of the evening, the IMCA stock cars.

Mike Stark won his third and fourth straight victories in a row in his Karl Chevrolet dirt truck, totaling six for the season. Tony Moro broke the winning streak of Todd Cooney in IMCA late models and Damon Murty broke Steve Jackson’s streak in IMCA stock cars.

David Schrader jumped into the lead at the drop of the green of the IMCA late model feature. On lap four, Todd Cooney, who started in the fifth row passed Schrader and maintained the lead to the checkered. Finishing out the top four were Steve Borts, Schrader, and Nick Houseman. The win was the fourth in a row and sixth of the season for Cooney.

In the regular IMCA late model main, Tony Moro vaulted into the lead at the start of the race and held off several challengers – Craig Roberts, Todd Inman, and Craig Jacobs. Jacobs made a big move to pass Inman and Roberts and tried to move by Moro, but was unsuccessful. The final finish was Moro, Jacobs, Todd Cooney, and Roberts. Moro became the first late model winner at the speedway other than Cooney since May 21st.

In the make-up IMCA modified feature, Kevin Danielson took the lead from the pole position and led the entire race. Kendall Sather chased Danielson for the last half of the race, but could not find a way to pass him. The finishing order was Danielson, Sather, Mark Daughenbaugh, and John Davis.

The other IMCA mod main had two leaders, Mark Daughenbaugh on the first lap and John Logue for the other 14 laps. Logue powered away from the rest of the field and won easily. Tony Hofbauer finished second, Daughenbaugh ran third, and Ricky Stephan was fourth.

In the only IMCA stock car feature of the night, Damon Murty led the entire race. At one point, he had a straightway lead. Two cautions tightened the field and at the end of the race, Steve Jackson stayed near Murty, but could not get by. Murty was the winner, stopping Jackson’s win streak at three in a row and four for the season. Jackson finished second, Don Killen third, and Randy Killen fourth.

By the second lap of the Karl Chevrolet dirt truck make-up race, Mike Stark passed Matt McBride and was able to win without any serious challenge. Carl Moyer finished second, Bret Moyer third, and Carl Knight fourth.

In the regular Karl Chevrolet dirt truck feature, Pat Fagen took advantage of starting on the pole and opened a huge lead early. On lap five a caution was thrown, and Fagen pulled off the track with mechanical problems. Mike Stark inherited the lead and after the restart led all the way to the end. Carl Moyer was running second and his front right tire went flat three laps from the finish. Speedway rules prohibit racing on flat tires. Matt Waugh was placed in second with Bret Moyer third, and Mike Fagen fourth.

In the first of two IMCA hobby stock make-up races, Rick Gladson passed Patrick Lowe on the second lap and continued in front to the finish for his fourth win of the season. Lowe ran second, Bill Bonnett third, and Adam Hagen was fourth.

Bill Dawson led the first lap of the second race. On lap two, Richard Sales moved past Dawson for the lead. Bruce Wolfe moved into second as the end of the race neared, and tried to pass Lowe on the last lap. A caution flag was thrown on the last lap and the top four in the yellow-checkered finish were Sales, Wolfe, Dawson, and Justin Maschke.

In the first of three regular IMCA hobby stock mains, Doug Gordon Jr. dominated the race. He started in the fifth row and led the entire race. As the second place car of Rob Allison came out of turn four, Gordon was in turn one. The finishing order was Gordon, Allison, Allen Van Gorp, and Adam Hagen. After the race, Gordon was claimed. Bill Dawson claimed his engine and Danny Watson claimed his carburetor.

In the second hobby main, Ray Stock Jr. passed Mike Johnson on the second lap and endured three caution periods before claiming the win. Justin Maschke took second with a last lap pass; Matt Inman was third, and Rex Bonnett fourth.

In the final hobby race, the #27 of Doug Seidl passed the #27x of Gerald Snyder on the third lap. Seidl held on to win the race that finished under a combination of yellow and checkered flags due to an accident on the last lap. Rick Gladson finished second, Dustin Smith third, and Gary Stajcar fourth.

Racing continues next Friday as Hilltop Pawn Shop Night with IMCA late models, modifieds, stock cars, and hobby stocks as well as Karl Chevrolet dirt trucks competing. Hot laps are at 6:00 PM with racing following around 7:00 PM.
