Iowa State Fair Speedway New Winners:

Toland, Havlik, Anderson and Moyer

by David Wilkinson

(Des Moines, Iowa) (May 14, 2004) Miller Lite Beer Night Friday at the Iowa State Fair Speedway was a night of fierce competition with hard racing, many lead exchanges, and crumpled cars. Rob Toland, IMCA late model; Randy Havlik, IMCA modified; and Paul Anderson, IMCA stock car, captured exciting features. Carl Moyer dominated the Karl Chevrolet dirt truck main and Doug Seidl seized his second IMCA hobby stock win. Randy Bradshaw and Todd Bass also won hobby stock features.

Side-by-side racing and lead exchanges marked the IMCA late model feature. Todd Inman jumped into the lead ahead of Randy Faux at the start. By the seventh lap, Todd Cooney moved into second and started running door-to-door with Inman. Cooney first tried high the groove and then on lap ten he went low into turn three and obtained the lead. Rob Toland, who started in the sixth row, caught Cooney and they raced together, exchanging the lead, with Toland finally winning. He was followed to the checkered by Cooney, Darrell DeFrance, and Faux.

The IMCA mod main event featured several lead changes between Richie Gustin and Randy Havlik. Gustin led the first two laps, Havlik the next two laps, then Gustin was in front for next two laps, and then Havlik finally took the lead for the rest of the race. However, Gustin and John Davis were on his tail, if not beside his car, for the remainder of the race. The finishing order was Havlik, Gustin, Davis and Ricky Stephan. The race was marred by five caution periods.

Paul Anderson took the lead on the second lap of the IMCA stock car feature, but by mid-race it was crowded up front as Steve Jackson engaged Anderson. On several occasions, Jackson passed Anderson in turn one, only to see Anderson recapture the lead coming out of turn two. As they passed flagman Bob Moses on lap thirteen, Anderson, Jackson, and Don Killen were in a group across the track. Anderson held on for the victory with Killen second, Jackson third, and Greg Shepherd fourth.

The Karl Chevrolet dirt truck feature had a big pile-up on the second lap involving five trucks. Carl Moyer led the entire race and developed a full front-straight lead over Bret Moyer, Mike Stark, and Ben Nading by the time they crossed the finish.

Doug Seidl dominated the first IMCA hobby stock feature. He led from the drop of the green to the checkered. Paul Wheel finished second, John Watson third, and Rick Gladson fourth. After the race, Mike Johnson claimed Seidl’s engine. In the second hobby main, Randy Bradshaw led the entire race and was able to nose out Rob Allison and Steve Curtis in this race that finished under a yellow-checkered flag. The third hobby feature ran without interruption with Todd Bass passing Terry Warburton for the lead on lap three. The finishing order was Bass, Ted Hill, Matt Inman, and Gary Stajcar.

No racing will be held on Friday June 11 due to the Pork Expo use of the fairgrounds. Racing continues next Friday evening, Don's Auto and Truck Night, with IMCA late models, modifieds, stock cars, and hobby stocks as well as Karl Chevrolet dirt trucks competing. Hot laps are at 6:00 PM with racing following around 7:00 PM.
