Iowa State Fair Speedway Victors:

Cooney, Wilke, Killen, Moyer, Murray, Curtis, and Hagen

by David Wilkinson

(Des Moines, Iowa) (May 28, 2004) Karl Chevrolet Night at the Iowa State Fair Speedway Friday featured some great racing. It was a family affair as Todd Cooney bested Chad Cooney in the IMCA late model main. Chris Wilke picked up the IMCA modified win and Don Killen won the IMCA stock car race. For the third time this year, Bret Moyer won the Karl Chevrolet dirt truck main and IMCA hobby stock winners were Jacob Murray, Steve Curtis, and Adam Hagen.

Rookie Chad Cooney grabbed the lead at the start of the IMCA late model feature and ran door-to-door with Tony Moro in the turns for several laps. Older cousin Todd Cooney, who started 12th, was able to pass Moro on the outside on lap 12 and moved into second. The two Cooneys raced for the lead and Todd moved under Chad on lap 16 and Todd Cooney took the checkered first. Chad Cooney finished second, Ryan Griffith third, and Steve Borts fourth.

Tony Hofbauer nosed out Dave Farren for the lead at the start of the IMCA modified main. Halfway through the race, Chris Wilke moved through the field and passed Farren and set his sights on Hofbauer. On the backstretch of the 14th lap, Wilke passed Hofbauer. The finishing order was Wilke, Hofbauer, John Davis and Dave Farren.

In the IMCA stock car feature, Don Killen moved from his fifth row starting position to pass leader Tony Bass on lap three. Steve Campbell closed in on Killen until his hood flew up and blocked his view. Killen finished first followed by Steve Jackson, Greg Shepherd and John Hunnell.

The Karl Chevrolet dirt truck feature saw several lead changes as Brad Moyer took the early lead. On a restart, Bret Moyer passed him. Ben Nading raced side-by-side with Bret Moyer for a couple of laps and then moved ahead to become the leader. Moyer chased Nading and four laps later Moyer passed him for the lead. The finishing order was Brett Moyer, Nading, Brad Moyer, and Lou Sipolt.

In the first of three IMCA hobby stock features, Ted Hill passed Mike Johnson for the lead on the second lap. Two laps later, Jacob Murray passed Hill for first place and led the remainder of the race for his second win of the season. Rick Gladson finished second, Hill third, and Matt Inman was fourth.

In the second hobby main, Steve Curtis passed Don Wear midway in the race and captured his second win of the season. Wear ran second, Bruce Wolfe third, and Bill Atcheson was fourth.

In the third hobby race, Adam Hagen was able to hold off the late race charge of Justin Maschke for the win. Rex Bonnett was third and Tim Gannon was fourth. After the race, Rob Allison claimed Gannon’s engine.

Racing continues next Friday evening with mid-season championships for IMCA late models, modifieds, stock cars, and hobby stocks as well as Karl Chevrolet dirt trucks competing. Dwarf cars and two-person cruizers will join the field with hot laps are at 6:00 PM with racing following around 7:00 PM.
