Iowa State Fair Speedway Fall Special Winners:
Elliott, Jackson, Moyer, Cortin, and Morrill
by David Wilkinson
(Des Moines, Iowa) (September 24, 2004) Friday was a beautiful evening with short-sleeve weather and 150 cars on hand for the Fall Special at the Iowa State Fair Speedway. Mark Elliott won the modified feature and Steve Jackson captured his ninth win of the season at the track. Shay Cortin won the hobby stock feature after the race and track champion Carl Moyer was the winner in the Karl Chevrolet dirt truck race. Mike Morrill won the dwarf car main and the duo of Rod Richards & Andy Wood was the cruizer victor.
The modified race saw Rick Gustin rocket into the lead at the drop of the green. On the fourth lap, something broke in Gustin’s front end and he veered up the track and hit the wall in turn three bringing out a caution. John Davis, who was running second became the leader, opened a nice lead over Dave Farren Jr. Mark Elliott, who started in the sixth row, was running third by lap four and moved ahead of Farren Jr. On lap ten, Elliott passed Davis low and raced to the checkered. The final finishing order was Elliott, Davis, Joe McBirnie, and Farren Jr.
John Hunnell jumped into the lead ahead of Jeff Mueller at the start of the stock car main. On lap six, Steve Campbell squeezed by Hunnell for the lead, but Hunnell passed him on the next lap. Steve Jackson, who started in the sixth row, had moved into second by the tenth lap and closed in on Hunnell. On lap 13, Jackson pulled ahead of Hunnell in turns one and two, yet Hunnell took the lead as they entered the backstretch. On the next lap, Jackson made the pass stick and beat Hunnell to the checkered. Campbell ran third and Mike Todd was fourth.
Carl Moyer used the front row starting position to his advantage as lead all 15 laps of the Karl Chevrolet dirt truck feature. Moyer finished a full quarter-lap ahead of second place finisher Mike Stark. Ben Nading was third and Rick Clark fourth.
Sixty hobby stocks competed in the six heats, three b-features with 24 cars starting the A-feature. Rick Gladson led the first lap with fellow front-row starter Bryan Webb passing him on the second lap. Webb widened his lead and reached the checkers far ahead of the field. After the race, Webb refused an engine claim and was disqualified. Everyone in the field was moved up one place and Shay Cortin won with Kevin Donlan second, Gladson third and Mark Houden fourth.
Dwarf cars have made four appearances at the speedway this season and Mike Morrill has won all of them. He led all ten laps of the feature and finished ahead of David Rafferty, Fred Schimmels, and James May.
This event concludes the 2004 season at the Iowa State Fair Speedway.
