by David Wilkinson

(Des Moines, Iowa) (September 3, 2004) The regular season at the Iowa State Fair Speedway ended Friday night with championships in four classes. For the second year in a row, Greg Cox won the points championship in IMCA modifieds as Steve Jackson won his fifth title in the last six years. Steve Curtis captured the IMCA hobby stock trophy and Carl Moyer secured the Karl Chevrolet dirt truck title.

Prior to the beginning of the program, racer Maynard Davis III was remembered and honored. Davis died in a racing accident at the track in August. Lynne Carstens, a family friend read a message and then sang the national anthem. Stock car drivers circulated among fans seeking donations for the Davis family. Two number 43d black and green stock cars that Davis drove served as pace cars for the IMCA stock car feature.

In each of the championship features, the drivers starting in the first two rows were offered the JJAM Challenge – the opportunity to start the race from the tail and collect a double purse if they win. In those situations where the Challenge was accepted, the race was extended by three laps.

In the modified feature, John Davis and Tony Hofbauer accepted the challenge. At the drop of the green, Russ Gladson took the lead. On lap ten, he was off the power and left the race. Pat Graham used the inherited lead to his advantage and won the race. Hofbauer had moved through the field and was close to the leader as he finished second. Kevin Danielson was third and Bill Davis Jr fourth. The engine of Davis blew halfway through the race.

In the IMCA stock car race, points leader Steve Jackson accepted the JJAM challenge and was able to finish fourth in the race which ran green to checkered. Don Killen shot into the lead at the drop of the green with Mike Todd on his back bumper. On lap 13, Todd passed Killen and led the way to the checkered followed by Killen, Greg Shepherd, and Jackson.

Steve Curtis entered the IMCA hobby stock feature with a comfortable 23 point lead over Justin Maschke. Maschke took the early lead with Curtis on his tail. Halfway through the race, Curtis encountered problems and left the track. About the same time, Don Wear passed Maschke and was running for the win. On the last lap, Jacob Murray passed Wear to win the race. Wear was second, Maschke third, and Matt Inman finished fourth. After the race, Curtis maintained a five-point lead over Maschke for the championship.

In the Karl Chevrolet dirt truck main, Ben Nading pulled ahead of the field, leading the entire race for the victory. There was a dogfight behind him among four trucks with the final finishing order of Mike Stark in second, Carl Moyer in third, and Lou Sipolt fourth.

Mike Morrill led the entire dwarf car feature and won the race with a large lead. Burt Thompson ran second, Shane Hunter third and Jimmy May was fourth.

The 305 non-winged sprint cars returned to the track and ran a fifteen-lap feature. Bob Thompson was the winner with Jerry Crabb second, Tom Lenz third, and Dave Van Haften fourth.

In the two-person cruizer race, the #599 car of Jim and Josh May started in the fourth row and led all laps except the first one as they won the race.

Racing continues on Friday, September 17th with a special for IMCA stock cars and Karl Chevrolet dirt trucks and then on September 24th, another special featuring, IMCA modifieds and IMCA hobby stocks. Hot laps are at 6:00 PM with racing following around 7:00 PM.
