Stuart Speedway Stuart, Iowa For immediate release Sunday, May 2, 1999 STUART SPEEDWAY HONORS BRAD VAN SCOY
by DAVID WILKINSON
Sunday night's races at the Stuart Speedway were dedicated to Brad Van Scoy who died tragically in an automobile accident earlier in the week. Brad, son of Bob and Dee Van Scoy, was a 16-year Perry High School student beginning his racing career in IMCA hobby stocks. His father, a former racer, drove Brad's car during a special set of hot laps, during the national anthem, and as a pace car for all features.
The racing was fast, tough, and dusty. Joe College was running well as he won his heats in his IMCA modified and IMCA stock car, but he won only the modified feature. After a big pileup at the start of the modified feature, Paul Chumos placed his car in the lead on the restart. It took College only three laps to pass Chumos and he stayed in front for the remainder of the race. Ron Little moved into second on lap seven of the 20-lap feature and chased College to the checkered. Chumos finished third and Terry Pruitt fourth.
In the IMCA stock car feature, David Cirksena led all 15 laps for the victory. Tim Baker finished second, Steve Jackson third, and Marshall Allen fourth.
Mark Chance led all 12 laps of the first IMCA hobby stock feature. Jimmie Gustin, who banged his car hard off the front wall early in the race, challenged Chance in the final laps but had to settle for second. Adam Hagen finished third and Ben Hoesing fourth. Kerry Hayes was the early leader in the second hobby stock feature. However, he was unable to hold off the charge of Randy Embrey who won. Hayes was second, Keith Williamson third, and Chris Pruitt fourth.
The dwarf car feature was a barnburner with Jack Meyer leading all the way. He was challenged by Ed Zehm and Cliff Barber who finished second and third. Rick Dennis finished fourth. The A to Z Rental Trophy Dash for dwarf cars was won by Zehm.
The cruiser feature was won by the driving duo of Renslow and Waddell who passed Coon and College on the white flag lap. Johnston and Hood were third with Day and Kasal fourth.
Racing continues in all classes next Sunday with gates opening at 4:30 P.M., hot laps at 6:15, and competition at 7:00.
